Fish tank pumps for air exchange in PMP
    #3519253 - 12/19/04 02:36 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

I will be doing some traveling for the holidays and will be gone for about a week. So basically nobody here to fan the pods. I went down to petsmart and NONE of the pumps there had anything about the flowrate, no cc/min, cf/m, nothing, only how many gallon tank they fit. So i picked up a Top Fin 50 gallon fish tank air pump ($13.99) seen here online http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_d...D=1103441181838
sort of, mine doesn't have an knob to adjust the flowrate.

I already found the little chart on here somewhere that listed the required flow rate for your pod size and pointlessly took it with me while searching.

I currently have two 17 gallon (68 liter) pods, and may be upgrading to 3 soon. My question is this, do you guys think the flow coming from a simple 50 gal pump will be enough to completely supply 2x 17 gallons pods while i'm gone? Or 3 when i upgrade? I'm leaving tomorrow and i'm kinda freakin out! thanks so much..

Try this - Take a baloon and attach it to the end of some tubing, which should be plugged into the pump. Turn it on for a certain period of time (try to not blow the baloon up too much). Then get one of those big measuring cups, and stick the baloon all the way in. This should give you a rough estimate of volume/time . Alternately, get a large bucket and fill it with water. Stick the baloon all the way in. Record how much water must be added to refil the bucket to the top. Good luck, and I'm sure what you've got is going to be better than nothing. You should have at least 4 exchanges per day. This is just my gut feeling, I have used a lot of different pumps for aquariums.

This pump delivers 50 galons of air per hour.

No need for the balloon. The back pressure would probably slow the pump down anyway.

Submerge a quart jar and turn it upside down. Now you can raise it most of the way out and the water will stay inside. Put the tube into the jar and turn the pump on. Time how long it takes for the jar to fill with air.

It took 27 seconds on average to fill a 2L container as per ticktock's suggestion. Thats 13.5 sec/L.

With 3600 seconds/hour, divided by 13.5 for seconds/L gives ~267 L/hour.

I can't find where i found the chart again, but i did copy it. From that chart, for a 30 gallon container (I have 2x 17), 234-350 L/hr is recommended. So seeing as my 2 containers are a lil over 30 gallons and i'm in the lower end of the range, i think i'm a little bit on the lower end of 2-3 exchanges/hr (per magash from PMP tek). I think it should work just fine though.

That's about 70 gallons per hour. I think you will be fine.

Update:
I left for a week and humidity stayed excellent in the chamber. However, a buddy was supposed to come over and harvest and didn't, so a bunch of the caps opened and shit spores EVERYWHERE in my pod, which is now basically dark purple on the inside.
