rye was too dry, wbs is soggy...what next?
    #1120910 - 12/07/02 11:08 PM (21 years, 1 month ago)

okay im damn near giving up...
1. i was ripped off $160 by dungbros  to start off my most recent shrooming escapade
2. i tried using rye and found that it was too dry, and was given advice to mist and see what happens, only to have it funk up with some grey nasties
3. i went out and got some finch seed...made sure to get the kind with no preservatives and even got the kind without sunflower seeds. this turned negative as well when using nearly the exact method as rye, only to have them soggy and stinky this time around.
it seems like only yesterday i was overabundantly producing little guys with ease. i guess i should have stayed with pf cakes in jars, but to be honest...i find that they confine my little friends too much. i wanted them to grow free and tall in an aquarium set up.
i think if 3rd time doesnt turn out to be a charm, im going to cut my MANY MANY losses and quit. any advise?

Fill half a pint jar wth millet, fill the rest of the jar with water and leave the grain to soak overnight.
Drain the grain, rinse it well and leave to dry.
Pack the jars and PC.
Works for me.
I used to simmer my grain with minimal success.
Initially it worked but as time passed the jars started gunking up.

Lysol is your friend.
What about straw or poo, spawned with BRFcakes?

Try what DERRAYLD is suggesting, also take this advice:
"It?s best to make a batch of test jars when one acquires a new grain for instance 100g rye and 100, 105, 110, 115 and 120g water.
Then you?ll see which water content provides the best result for you." from http://shroomery.org/faq/faq.php?display=faq&nr=67&catnr=5&prog=1&lang=en .

DAMN YOU DUNG BROS! this could be so much more simple.

and not to mention, im almost out of spores. ive got maybe 3 ccs of equador, and 2 of thailand lamai beach (spelling?).

To spread out your spores, try making karo water. You can get 100cc from just 1cc of spores. Search the message board for Karo water, or liquid culture.

any advise?

Yeah, don't quit so soon.  Once you get grain right, you will scoff at brf.  I use millet and prepare it pretty much the same way that derralyd advised, and it works like a charm.  Keep at it and soon you will be swimming in the shrooms.

Sorry to hear you spent 160 bucks on the dung bros, they suck   Hell, your in the middle of a state filled with shit (both actual poo, and the politicians that come out of there), I'm sure you could find all the poo that you need for next to nothing (cost wise).

Keep trying and best of luck.

ok musharoom....you were just plain rude.
i spent 160 to get a complete kit.

yes i have grown before but using cakes and i didnt like that. it makes squatty looking shrooms.

and correct me if im wrong, but a pressure cooker costs quite a bit more than $20. a good one with a psi meter is at least $50.

and no i dont want anyone to give me spores, ass. i was just merely stating that i cant do too many more failed experiements.

so yeah, thanks but no thanks!

thank you for the encouragement.
truthfully, i am just stressed from situations at work and at home and this was just one more stressor that i didnt want to deal with.
i am not going to give up, its just going to be really difficult to get anything done until the 15th when i get paid again.

and i dont want to use poo cause im growing in my walk in closet and i dont want my clothes getting smelly. i have a "professional" type job.
besides, i havent even gotten there yet. unless i was just able to get a cow pie and squirt spores onto it, i doubt it would help...besides, i dont live in the country. i live in a major metropolitan area where there is barely any grass more or less cows. hehehe

but seriously, thanks for your words of advise.
im out for the night...
i have to write a paper over clockwork orange and 2 others before class tomorrow.

Cool, gotta love college.

You spent $160 on a kit? I'm sorry my dear child. Sheesh, that sucks.

It doesn't smell.

If you aren't ready for poo, you may have a difficult time with grain. IMO, grain is much harder to get right than poo.
