Reddish Brown Mycelium?
    #1116294 - 12/06/02 02:38 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

Well I have had 2 succesful grows previous to this and this is a dumbfounder. I innoculated a few pint jars ALA MMG some w/ filters some w/o I used Hawks Eyes ECU syringes. The mycelium growth started pretty quickly but it looks like the mycelium turned a brownish red... the growth occured exactly at the innoculation points and at the edge of the brown there is still white growth. Any thoughts?

Thanks
wumba

this happened to me once.. the inner part of the mycelium turned kinda pinkish and then to brown.. dont know what it was.. Only explanation I had was that it was the color from the verm. But it ended up fruiting very nicely

I just tossed two jars that had the same shit. When i split them open, there was a thin reddish-brown line running all the way thru it. I assumed at the time that this was contam, but now 2 of my jars in the terr. are showing the same shit. I'm gonna keep an eye on them to see what happens. No smell either... weird

i just had jars with that problem. the mycelium stopped colonizing. i opened the jars and boy did they smell sour. i scraped off the uncolonized brf and that got rid of the stench. i then cut the brown parts off the mycelium. it wasnt too extensive. they are fruiting in the terrarium right now and show no signs of contamination or brown and they dont smell anymore either. you described it as reddish brown. i would describe mine as light brown to almost orangish.

I agree with friggin wigga.. If you're using metal lids, it could just be rust dripping down onto your cake. If it is rust, don't worry about it, it won't hurt you at all. It might slow down mycelia growth a bit but it does no harm.
