I just bought a brand new dell (Inspiron 1440) at walmart for $500.  It's fuckin great.

I've had a dell for about 3 1/2 years now and it has served me well. Probably going to have to get a new one this Winter though.

You can customize a Inspiron 15.6 inch for under 500. Just use the on board video and you could probably upgrade to 4gig of RAM for under 500...

Walmart.com sometimes has some crazy deals. They are probally everywhere you just have to look.

As long as you're not a hardcore gamer or you don't do heavy image or video processing, you needn't worry much about performance. I have good experience with Dell, HP and Toshiba. Currently, I'm using a HP since my employer only offers those. Fine with me though. Otherwise I'd have gone for Toshiba, probably.

Macs are great of course, but not really a viable option if you're on this type of budget. I'd stick with a PC.

Yea, I mean Walmart has the same brands you will get anywhere else. I'd recommend buying it online as opposed to the stores. And brand names aren't don't necessarily correlate to good hardware... they are all probably using the same hardware.

True, to a some extent (hard/optical drives, LCD panels). But after sales support differs a bit, but the big brands tend do offer decent service.

www.newegg.com is my go-to place for anything computer related.  i like it better than tiger direct. 

whatever you decide on, regardless of where you buy it from, make sure you look up reviews for the specific model.  if you don't buy from newegg, at least check to see if it's sold there, as usually products have at least a couple of reviews.

I bought an HP in January and the only real issues I had were the bloatware that came installed and the temperature it ran at. Didn't employ the graphics too much besides Winamp visuals and running San Andreas (flawlessly). Tweaking the Vista graphics down helped it run a lot smoother. However, I am unfarmiliar with performance of Windows 7. I have since sold it to fund the building of a desktop, but it was worth the money.
