If you'll really only be using it to get online you may want to check into a netbook.

You'll find better deals online. If you're going to buy it from a store I'd suggest Bestbuy, I've seen some crazy deals there. I bought my laptop from them a few years ago for almost 1/3 off the price.

Ok to start please don't think I'm a prick for quick short answers here, but I am an IT consultant and hearing these questions makes me want to start yelling answers.

If your limit is $500 then you need to ask one important question to start. Do you care if it's used/refurbed? I will never buy another new laptop again. I build my own servers and PC's anyway. A laptop is a little more difficult to build yourself. Go to Ebay and shop around if you want the best deal. PC's on resale go for a fraction of a new major OEM selling it.

Windows 7 comes out on Oct 22. You can pre-order from many sites including microsoft.com for nearly half price. They give you the option of the disk being mailed to you, or you can download it from there site on the release day. Also Windows 7 needs less resources than Vista. Windows 7 is what Vista was meant to be. I still hate Vista, but I am a supporter of Win7.

If you bought a new PC that came with Vista in the last few months than you may get a free Windows 7 upgrade. If it's an older version of Vista, then you may get a free downgrade to XP.

If you don't want to use Ebay, then use something like newegg or tigerdirect. They usually have good deals. Avoid Best Buy and Walmart like black mold and tryc. They will only try to upsell and get you to wast your money on their extended warranties and other BS. Your best interest are not on the mind of Best Buy! They are even receiving some nice benefites (bribes) from Microsoft and in exchange they have their employees being trained by microsoft to push propaganda and downright lies about a lot of things so that the customer will purchase only what they want.

first off, you should check to make sure that it's stocked at the wal-mart right near you.  i'm pretty sure you can do that online.

so far as the comp goes, :shrug: you can get more for the money, but it's not bad.  here is something very similar but with a slightly faster processor and better DVD burner.  pretty much same everything else.

here is something better all around, for $50 more.  faster processor than both, more ram, larger harddrive, better vid processor, better dvd burner than both (dual-layer w/ labelflash capabilities), and twice the cache.

does anybody have any experience with an hp pavillion dv9000
or hp pavillion dv6910us

i can get the dv9000 for 475 from craigslist....is this a no no??

shipping from newegg is top notch.  they process fast, ship fast.

however, that last one is from tiger direct.  which also has a great reputation.

Only because usually it is cheaper online. A lot of the laptops are only offered for sale online.

Shop around. You won't be upset with whatever you get. The technology has came a long way, its hard to go wrong nowadays...
