sup folks... i gathered some money and wanna spend it on a new notebook... i made some research and the things are cheaper in the states than in europe... and that added to the sweet conversion rate lately really would give me a great deal...
so i wanted to ask you guys what you would recommend... a friend of mine is going to the states in a few days and i'm gonna ask her to buy it for me... the price range i'm looking at is 700 to 800 US$... i'm not a big gamer, but i would like to be able to play at least a few games on it...
any input is greatly appreciated... thanks you guys!

Macs are quite expensive but well worth it in my opinion but now days you could get something cheaper and put mac osx on it.

You can buy a pretty nice HP for that money and they are very nice. However I would look for one that still has Windows XP on it. Vista is a real piece of shit. But like alot of people have said if you can afford an Apple I would go that route because most new PC's come with Vista.

I had a toshiba, did what I needed it to plus some. My fiance put linux on it and it ran like a champ in either linux or Windows XP. My brother is a comp. pro and also uses a toshiba without any problems. Enjoy!

sure, if you don't mind having an integrated graphics card. the memory is pretty good, as is the hard drive space. for 900 dollars not a bad deal. don't know a lot about Dell notebooks. i personally don't like their builds. they don't seem very sturdy to me. have you checked out any Asus computers?

good to know, especially since i'm looking for a sturdy one that can take a beating... i don't mind the integrated graphics card... have one on my old laptop and it's ok... especially since a dedicated memory card would rise the price by about 100 bucks..
i've looked at a few asus laptops, but i don't seem to find a good deal... gonna keep looking... thanks for the input!!!

I have a toshiba... it's the shit. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114399 Perfect for gaming.
Granted, that's out of the price range you listed. But I fucking love it.
You can get something about as decent for cheaper.. look around. But I recommend toshiba laptops they are solid. Dells are generally shit. I've never personally experienced Asus but I've heard mixed things about them.. cheap/inferior components and fell apart easy or some such.
Just if you want to do any kind of halfway decent gaming.. stay away from anything with an integrated graphics card/shared memory. You want a dedicated graphics card. I guess it just depends what kind of games you'd want to be playing. Simple games an integrated card can handle just fine, but I find it's worth it to have a dedicated card, then again I'm a hardcore gamer.

Check this one out - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114234
Recertified.. 17" widescreen.. 128mb Nvidia card.. (I'd stay away from ATI).. only 120GB of hard drive space though and 1gb of ram. But it's got all the bells and whistles.. something like that should be able to handle most mid-level games with relative ease.. but I wouldn't try playing anything high-end and super graphics intensive on it.
AND it comes with XP on it. Fuck Vista. I spent about a week straight uninstalling Vista from this machine after I got it.. it was brand new so it was hell trying to find XP drivers that worked. Vista is an absolute piece of crap.
But something like that should suit your needs.. I'm sure if you looked you could probably find something a little cheaper even.

Seems decent enough. But read what I said about ATI cards.. I hate them personally. In my experience they run into a lot of problems and they are not nearly as supported with drivers and whatnot as Nvidia cards are. I could just be biased though. Note that more video memory does not always mean better performance. I've seen some 256mb graphics cards that blow 512mb cards out of the water.
Just whatever you do, do a lot of research before you make the purchase. You want to get the most bang for your buck. I spent a good two weeks reviewing various notebooks and comparing before I settled on the one I got, and I couldn't be happier with it (despite spending like 2 weeks getting XP set up). What I ended up with is hands down the best notebook you can possibly get under 2k imo.. I read a lot of reviews and did a lot of research before deciding.
Check out these forums: http://forum.notebookreview.com/
lots of knowledgeable folk and just about every laptop at least one person there owns so you can get a review or some first hand experience.

that qosmio one certainly looks good... i especially like that it still has xp on it, which is a huge advantage... i haven't had much experience with vista, but it is a huge piece of shit until now... thanks for the input, dude... gonna see if i find a couple of reviews before i make my choice... but i like it so far...

Vista is a HUGE pile of shit. I would avoid it at all costs if you can possibly manage. It's not even supposed to run on a machine with less than 4gigs of memory, but if I had that much memory I wouldn't waste it on Vista! But if you do get one with Vista.. make sure it has XP drivers to support it so you can switch. I went through hell trying to get drivers working for mine, though it was brand new.
Here's a couple thread on the Asus one you linked - http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=182480 http://forum.notebookreview.com/archive/index.php/t-188209.html http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=181239 http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=2487378
And the toshiba one I linked: http://www.notebookreview.com/price/default.asp?productID=12962&productFamilyID=451&display=priceDetail http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=28366 http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=30533
At any rate.. look around and do some reading first. Seems the Asus one has some pretty good reviews though.
I think your main decisions would be: Do you want AMD or Intel? Do you want Nvidia or ATI?
Some people swear by AMD, but I think Intel still outperforms AMD on the highest levels. They are pretty close though.
Also what kind of games would you be playing on it?

yeah I wish I would have stuck with windows XP.
I just got a new HP Pavilion w/ Vista and im sending it in next week to be replaced for the 2nd time in 8 months.
HP the company has been excellent in terms of customer service. but this OS is a complete piece of shit as it sounds like you already know.
