You can use Perlite instead of vermiculite, its similar. Try using a mix of the potting soil and verm, some fine washed sand, and some perlite. Check the grow/find section for more details. For the jars, I find jars to be the best but there other things you can use such as normal jars (from the store) with plastic film tops etc.

First the niner tek is probaly not for begginers. I would thourghly read the PF Tek and stick to it. This will assure you success your first or second time:

Second, you may not be able to find vermiculm because it is called vermiculite, it is available at any garden store, most hardward stores, Agway, Lowes, Walmart, or Kmart. Ask in the gardening section. Vermiculite is a very widely available and used material, thus it is not hard to find. Plus the niner tek calls for a layer of dry vermiculite on top of the cooked rice to cut down on contams so you will need it no matter what. Vermiculite is a shroom growers best friend, better find a good local source.

The same places that sell vermiculite will probalay also sell canning jars, although you may have to look around for these.
The season we are currently enjoying is spring, most people can in the fall during harvest time. If you still cant find jars look at the local thrift shops, many have great deals on used jars, and new lids are always available at the grocery store. Paying the shipping fees from internet orders would make them three to four time their normal price.

Good Luck on your first crop!!!!!!!!!

If I were 3mshrooms, I wouldn't be too happy that you blurted out that he gave you a free syringe! He's probably getting bugged by syringe leeches already.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will avoid the 9er tech. I have been looking for canning jars for quite some time with no luck so I will have to use something else. I have only looked at walmart for verm and they just had a 50/50 mix with potting soil, I will keep looking for the pure stuff, but if i can't find it i will use the 50/50 or Perlite.

Please Don't Ask 3mshrooms for free spores it was a limited time offer but feel free to buy syringes from him, he is a very good supplier and ships real quickly.

Pumper, about the canning jars...you can buy them online at www.wildprairie.com. They cost me about $15 with shipping for 12 jars. That is about twice the average cost, but if you can't find them anywhere else it might be worth it. Good Luck!

If it helps at all... I got 12 1 pint Kerr jars (w/lids) at Albertson's for $9.99. I've found K-Mart the cheapest source for vermiculate and perlite, and well just about everything else minus spores and syringes. Good luck

Hey pumper, stick with finding the verm. It is used by gardeners everywhere. Some of the guys over at ADM and drooldonkey have talked about using those ziploc disposable containers but if this is your first time growing then I suggest you stick with the tried and true methods. Find those jars somewhere. I have had good results with jars up to 1 pint. The important thing is that the jars don't have a shoulder to them. Try your local thrift stores or you can try country style hardware stores.
