Need advice and guidance for first time.-- Wbs(flour)
    #2700452 - 05/19/04 11:19 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

First off supplies:

2 18 gallon rubbermaids.
1 100 watt aquarium heater.
Sterile syringes.
Spore Prints.
5 lbs. Wild Bird seed.
8 qts. Vermiculite *looks to be medium grain
8 qts. Perlite
12 half pint jars.
1 4 watt 8 inch flourescent with ballast.
1 12 qt. pressure cooker.
Miscellaneous items.

I have read basically all the teks, and read old threads ad nauseum, but would really enjoy some personal responses and guidance.

The plan goes something like this:

First Make syringes using the shotglass tek.

Then use the PF tek substituting wbs Flour instead of BRF. The question here is should It soak the seeds like in the normal grain teks? (And also in a normal grain tek, is verm not used, just the grain in the jar?) And if It should soak them, should It soak them, let them dry and then turn them into flour? And if anyone hase experience with wbs flour and can give improvements on the existing pf tek that would also be great.

It plans on innoculating the jars by making 4 holes equidistant apart in the lids, should It still wrap them in foil, and if yes should there be holes in the foil?

After PC'ing it will be colonizing them in the standard rubbermaid heater setup. How much water would you recommend? And does it evaporate quickly (RH seems to be around 50-70 in the house.)

Then another rubbermaid, possibly one of the 18 gals. will be used for a terrarium, a casing may be done but that will be decided later. The terrarium will be lined with perlite to keep humidity up, and it will be kept in about 72 or so degrees. A lid will be placed on it with the flourescent on a 12/12 timer attached to the bottom of the lid(making it somewhat stealth). There have been thoughts of using a small fan to facilitate air movement, and if it is, how long does perlite hold water? and will a constant airflow affect humidity? If not, there will be manul fanning as often as possible.

Also, dunking after colonization. Cold water the best idea? for 12-24 hours... Placing the cakes in the water holding them under with something? Possibly a bit of peroxide?

..........

Again it should be pointed out it likes to be sure about things before doing them. And any responses are appreciated.

For the most part information is needed on the initial jar set-up, WBS flour and what not. Or regular wbs set-ups, whichever would be best for a beginner who can follow directions, has a decent understanding of the concepts involved, and would like the least amount of hitches.

Thank you.

I suggest u simply grind the wbs into flour (no need of soaking), then use it like this tek.

For the dunking question , cold water is not necessary for cube .
Better is to use a peroxided or bleached water for less contamination risks .

No , only soak whole grain !
Flour is a lot more sensitive to heat than grain .
If u r afraid , just add 15 min when u PCing ,but dont soak and dry , waste of time !

Thank you guys!! You help to alleviate the "I haven't done it, and don't want to screw up so please tell me it will be ok" stress.
