I can't find any anywhere. The only thing I can find is "Schultz multi-purpose soil conditioner" and it's everywhere but no vermiculite. It says on the pack that it's better than vermiculite because it doesn't get compressed over time, but better for what? LOL Do you think my friend could use that or perlite? It sucks because that the only thing that I couldn't find for him was the vermiculite.

As far as I know, there's really no subsitute for it but you could use another substrate. You don't HAVE to use BRF and Vermiculite. Have you tried Home Depot or Frank's Nursery? Home Depot sells it but might be out of it due to it being "Out of Season." But Frank's Nursery has TONS of it. I'm not sure if you have them by you but they are a chain.

No, I don't think brown rice would work so well because it will feed any contaminates and doesn't provide the air space like verm. You have two good options: Go with an alternate substrate, or order some vermuculite. It is very light and there have been several posts listing suppliers who will ship it out. I would also look a little bit harder in your town for verm. I don't know if you live in a town that is very small, but where I live there are about a dozen stores that carry it. I live in a different region so these stores may be foreign to you.

I live in the US and Wal Mart, Kmart, and Bucheits didn't have it. I'll try some garden shops tommorrow, hopefully they'll have it. They are way out of the way compared to the stores I went to but it will be worth it I guess :)

Tell you what...I'll send you a 30 pound bag for free if you take that 311 banner out of your signature.
heh...It's a little-known fact, but you can buy huge 30 sacks of Vermiculite at pool repair companies. Just open up your good ole' phono booko and find a company that offers major repairs. Call em up and say you'd like to buy 'Straight VM' for a gardening project. Make sure you dont get 'vm mix', which is vm and portland cement. I've got assloads of vm.
I used to work for a pool supply warehouse...30 pound sacks of this stuff sell for 12 bucks. And 30 pounds is one hell of a lot of vm.
hope that helps.

I know places like Walmart and home depot don't seem to carry it anymore, but try a landscaping place or a Big green house, a nusery, or even a large florist. I've had luck in those area's

I found some at Super Stop and Shop (grocery store here in the US) of all places it was with the cut flowers and gardenign stuff. mixed in with the bird seed to be exact.
not sure if other food stores have it but they may.
you can order a big bag of the stuff for like $10 thats what i had done befor going to get grocerys and finding it there.
