ok so I opened one jar, was hit with a distinctively fishey and not nice aroma, took it outsidem and no stones at all, so I opened the other four jars, same thing, stinking fishy smell no stones in sight!

lol, I had a feeling I'd fucked these up. was no signs of green or anything. Made myt girlfriend retch too , arf arf.

smellt like rotting grass seed I suppose.

any ideas before I try a new batch what went wrong here?

too much moisture in jarS I think. Never turned lovely white, just grey and then stopped changing.

will try less water /coffee next time maybe mix it up in a bowl to get a better judge of moisture content, please leave any tips below as Im gonna try again tomorrow. want stones for christmas!

You sound like you had a problem with moisture content. Too much moisture = foul smelling mold and no mushrooms.

I wonder how you control the moisture content? Not only did I work hard, but I spent a considerable amount of money putting all my stuff together. I will literally die if I find nothing at all.

Here's another pic, at 3 1/2 weeks. I thought I shook them at the appropriate time, but I'm of the belief now that I shook them too soon. They've all formed well up top, but the lower half, as you can tell, is much less. This really concerns me. Only one jar has a full whiteness that comes up against the glass, which seems right to be me because it's the most beautiful. What do you think? Should I give them another shake?

Just be patient and let them do their thing.

Sorry Fractal, sounds like cobweb or something. Better luck next time. No clue what went wrong.

my experience so far with 8 jars of MexA at 30days from inoculation
-- 4 jars were never shook during colonization but completely colonized and myc is slightly thinner at the bottum of the substrate. no stones appear anywhere on outside of substrate that is shrinking dramatically within the jar
-- 4 jars were shook once at 40% colonization and also formed very thick puffy myc toward the top 1/3 of the substrate much like the picture above and seem the myc does not fully extend to the bottum of the jars the way the unshook jars did
-- of those 4 shook jars, 2 of those were shook after full colonization to try and help distribute some of dense myc througout the rest of the jar but never fully recovered.

conclusion:
-- maybe the substrate was to moist for MexA.  foaf did fully saturate the BrownRice substrate. maybe MexA prefers a slightly dryer substrate, water is being sucked out of the medium and pooling at the bottum of the MexA jars as if the myc is removing it from the substrate instead of using it. the ATL#7 jars made at the same time with BR substrate absolutely love the fully saturated medium
-- the jars were contaminated during inoculation or post inoculation.
-- never shake any near or fully colonized MexA jar even if no stones are visible, just leave it alone from inoculation until harvest
-- on the 2 jars that were shook only once mid colonization with puffy dense white growth on the top 1/3 of the subsatrate is excreating a honey/syrup looking substance that gathers on top of the substrate in the form of droplets, maybe they are metablolites that excreating because of a contamination fight within the jar

gonna give the MexA another try with new jars made with a slightly less saturated BrownRice substrate. isolating MexA on agar looks like the best way to find a great stone producer from MS but unfortunately these jars will be knocked up with MS same as the 1st set. hope the spore syringe solution isn't in some way contaminated to begin with. seeing lots of similar results from MexA here lately

sorry bout the bum results of your jars FractalXplora. seems the same results are in store for the 1st batch of my foaf MexA jars

that was very helpful for me. I've noticed the "shrinking." I glory at the thought of stones filling the unseen innermost parts of the jar. thanks you for your post

ok, so I started 3 more jars, this time i mixed the rye seed up in a bowl aka pktek, using the exact measurments from RR's tek makes my seed to damp,i needed about 70ml less coffe/water, and I used the hand squeeze technique to test my water content.

Just goes to show that some rye seed must take less water than others,

jars looking good now gonna knock em up tomorrow, praying my LC is still sound

It is really interesting observing what is going on inside those jars. It has already been just passed four weeks. It appears the grain/mycelium has become a solid unit. However, the bright, thick, white mycelium has only spread the top half of the jars, the bottom half basically untouched. But it's interesting. The stuff is apparently shrinking, or condensing, pulling away from the glass on all sides, providing better air exchange to the undeveloped areas of grain. It is interesting to see. The mycelium is turning lightly brown, and the grain just beneath it is now turning bright white. Nonetheless, I am concerned, both about production and time efficiency.

I see now how vital air exchange is for the mycelium to run through the grain. I wonder how I might bring more air to the grains on my next project. Rather than quart jars, I might try sealed trays. I also wonder what is happening within the grain where I can't see. I can only think it isn't as white with mycelium as it may look, because the air exchange rate is indefinitely lower than that of the edges around the glass. And like I said, it has already been four weeks and only half the grain in the jars are thick with mycelium. I don't know how long it will be before the entire jar is white and brown with mycelium, new and old, but I suspect it will be at least 3 months. I hope this slow process doesn't stunt any sclerotia growth when I crack open those jars and dig out my treasures.

Last night I busted open a 7-8 jar (5 being a jar with the least myclelium, 10 a jar with the most), since it's been 7 weeks and I have so many jars, I thought I'd give up one to see what it produced, and what did I find? I found it stoneless, smelling not like mushrooms, but fermentation. RR pretty much guaranteed stones within six weeks. Since there's nothing at all, it's likely the case for every jar. So instead of waiting any longer, I'm thinking I should open jar by jar to see if I find any stones. Is that fair? Does that sound like a reasonable idea to anybody else?
