quick question about steam sterilization: first grow begins tonite!!!

I'm wondering what the water level should be for sterilizing my half-pint jars without a pressure cooker. Just below the lid perhaps? I'm gonna cover them with tin foil, maybe use masking tape for the holes, not sure yet. I'm using BRF and vermiculite.  Also, should should the lids be  on tight or a little loose?


Any advice would be greatly appreciated, can't wait to get started!

For sure.. not that close to the lid.. I did this once, and had 100% success with 2 jars. The water level was about just under half and over a quarter of the jar height (was just under full boil heat). I did use a plate to raise the jars off the bottom, which allowed greater water content (which allows the process to last longer). I then let it cool in the pot, lid on, everything worked out. But also, every step was alcohol prepped, glove boxed, and aerial sprayed as need be from beginning to end. I had the lids on tight with a hole drilled (probably too big, but a 1/2" hole) and a tyvek filter.

This is my only experience, so hopefully better info will follow.

You only need about an inch of water in the bottom of the pot.  Elevate the jars on a rack so the water isn't touching them.  Watch the videos on the brf tek page.  The first video shows how to load the sterilizer.

thanks for the info, i'm gonna be doing 12 jars total.  Really wish i could get a pressure cooker but i'm completely broke at the moment.

I usually put an upside down bowl on the bottom of pot with a plate on top of the bowl, then fill water up to right beneath the bottom of the jars.
