So..red light doesn't hinder mycelium growth?
    #11141128 -

As I said before the temps are dropping a little lower every night here, so I was doing a little research on the web, and if I am reading correctly, red light has no effect on colonization good or bad, is that correct? The reason I ask is because I have a desk lamp that has a 25 watt red bulb in it, and I was thinking I could use that to keep a small amount of heat on my bags, until I could finance something better. I have a little thermometer that is sitting on top of the bags, and when I put them in the dark under red light the temp eventually moves up to 78 degrees, and stays there as far as I can tell. Of course, I don't intend to leave it on constantly..that seems like a fire hazard to have it pointing directly at two plastic bags all the time....

Light towards the red end of the spectrum--which is not necessarily a "red bulb"--does not initiate pinning in the way that light towards the blue end of the spectrum does.

But it really doesn't matter for colonizing jars--they won't start pinning in the jar before the substrate is fully colonized, whether or not they're exposed to light. That is, a jar will colonize just as well in a dark cabinet as it would sitting on your desk.

If you're worried about temps--75 up to 80 is ideal for incubating--then build a proper tub-in-tub (TiT). All you need is a couple of nesting rubbermaids and a fishtank heater, pretty cheap to build.
