No More Jars: My progress as a noob cultivator
    #11130782 -

This post is mainly for the benefit of all the neophytes, noobs, beginners, etc. here that are starting with cakes or pre-made kits from vendors and seek to simplify their techniques while increasing their yields. If the heads also wanna throw some comments down, feel free.

So today, after about year into my cultivating attempts, I cracked and broke a quart jar on my gloved hand upon shaking, nearly severing my thumb. I kind of knew the day would come when this would happen, luckily no injuries resulted this time. I realize now maybe i should move on to autoclavable filter patch bags, as old school as i like to be, the jars just are too cumbersome anymore.

I also started off using WBS, i never attempted BRF/Verm cakes. WBS may have been the cheap easy way back in 1970 whatever, but nowadays, why bother? Rye/Wheat Berry is cheap, and easier to prepare IMO. Its also available everywhere if you know where to look (Feed Stores around Autumn, Health Food Stores year-round). I get mine for about $0.60 a lb.

I have noticed there is debate over grades of vermiculite. I have always used the medium grade mica, i find that the fine makes a paste when saturating, and is very difficult to work with. I have never tried the coarse vermiculite, as it is too expensive where i live ($45 a bag!) and it seems better suited for horticultural purposes. Whatever works. Feel free to continue this debate.

*SIDE NOTE* A FOAF recently suggested this to me: Saturate your vermiculite/perlite/combo (to be used as a moisture reservoir) with 1 part 35% (food-grade) H2o2, and 1 part distilled water. He said something about the H2o2 exfoliating the verm. and being beneficial to aeration, as well as sterilizing the verm. and resisting contams. To me it seems that would be way too strong a concentration and would only damage the mycelium. I would love feedback on this.

Finally, i just want to say BULK SUBS. Why waste your time and money on cakes? Go the extra mile and build a monotub, its so cheap and effective! The only thing i don't like about monotubs is that fruitbodies emerge from the sides and usually do not reach maturity. To alleviate this what i have been doing is spawning my grain to a smaller tub with the bulk sub in it, case, and when time to initiate pinning, i lift the sub out of the tub, and transfer to the bigger monotub for fruiting. This way the sides are exposed and can produce full fruitbodies that are easy to pick. Then when flushed, its much easier to dunk.
That's all i've got to say on this matter, for my next grow i'll be sure to use the bags and who knows, maybe i'll post my first grow log. Until then,
Cheers!

I've always said/thought that monotubs/bulk is soooo much easier than cakes & a poor-mans-pod.  It's just EASY.  Fucking EASY.

I'd encourage all people out there doing cakes right now to give bulk a try next time.  It's not as hard as it leads on, and you'll be MUCH happier with your results (most likely)

...why you say jar broke while shaking almost cut finger off....?

that is putting a fear in my head, almost like paranoia... ok, not quite that bad, but when you say that about a jar breaking without us really knowing how it broke all kind of images come into mind on how it happened...

I like jars, there pretty, they organize well, there reusable, etc..

I've changed hundreds of windwhields in my lifetime, many were shattered, I've never been injured.

I just wonder if some type of not paying attention or carelessness is involved when I hear people saying  jars broke almost had to go to hospital..

is it just a paranoia that people have; like when a cop drives past their house on a normal neighborhood drive and the person thinks they are now being watched?..
