Vermiculite Granulate and a 6 day suffocation
    #11123990 -

Hi there,

I'm new here and somewhat new to Mushroom growing. My friend swim had some concerns about the latest batch that he cooked up 7 days ago or so, and asked me to post his concerns here.

Swim bought vermiculite from a new source a week or so ago, because swim was going to purchase agar from them and figured swim might as well restock a bit.

When swim opened the package, swim was shocked to discover swim had ordered vermiculite granulate without realizing the difference. It's basically very large verm.

Here is what the substrate looks like:

Heres a cake with normal verm for comparison:

Swim inoculated a couple of jars of this substrate with amazonian p. cub. about 6-7 days ago. Swim is now worried because he has not seen any progress. However, swim would like to note, he used packaging tape over the holes and just today noticed, that the holes on the tape had seemingly resealed, and the cakes have been suffocating for about a week.

Swim, having removed the tape from all the lids of the jars will now wait another week and hope for progress.

However, swim would like to inquire the Shroomery community as to what they believe the survival rate of this batch is, considering the oversized vermiculite and the suffocation.

p.s. Swim used BRF cakes, and inoculated via spore print.

Should be ok, if you don't love them to death.

Temps? Storage location?

large verm is fine, its not the best but works. larger verm holds less moisture so you may need to adjust water content. But they will still grow.

dont use packing tape. Use either micropore tape or masking tape. its really only to help stop water getting in during sterilisation, but still allow the jars to breath so moisture doesnt build up in the dry verm layer.

Yoiu can just remove it

29c is a bit on the hot end, but should be ok. Darkness isn't needed, but it's ok too.

Is there anything swim can do to possibly insure the survival of these cakes, or is it best to just sit, wait and hope?

Wait. They'll grow something sooner or later.
