Is there a substitute for Vermiculite?

hey everyone i'm new to growing mushrooms i had bought me some Brown Rice which is what it says to get in the MMGG and what i understand is that i need Vermiculite but what exactly is it i was at wal-mart garden section forever, saw a bunch of soils that i could buy but not vermiculite, Can i jsut buy one of those packaged soils?? is Vermiculte jsut packaged soil ?? if anyone can help me with this i would appreciate it

Vermiculite is usually very common. Try Lowe's or gardening stores. If you can't find it, I hear that coir can be used as a substitute in PF jars, but I don't know from personal experience.

I used perlite because I didn't know any better and let them fruit as cakes. I would not recommend it only because you have to keep em hydrated. dunk em first and let em fruit and dunk em again. I had about 3 flushes. BUT if you can get verm, I would get it. It is definitely worth the search.
