Possible Reishi recipes?

I was driving recently and found a bunch of reishi absolutely tearing up the side of a tree out here... there is probably a pound of reishi there, all said and told. I'm not going to take it all, but I have a significant amount I can use. So I would like to make something of them... but I don't know how.

I'm thinking that I need to dry them first, because I usually hear of it being used after it is ground. It makes sense, because the reishi is quite tough. Is there any special way to dry these, or will sticking them under a 150 watt bulb suffice?

I assume conk form is fine? I don't have to use antlers or anything. I also noticed the bottom of the conk is MUCH tougher than the top. Maybe just denser. Should I cut the bottoms off or anything?

And lastly, does anyone have any actual recipes they like? I'd like to find a good tea recipe, although I figure I can probably just boil some ground reishi in water and be done with it, I don't need anything fancy. But with as much as I have, I'd be willing to try.

Not that any conks are known to be poisonous, because they're not.  But you may want to post the conks for a positive id if you're not sure.

A post with pictures garners a lot more interest too.

Usually people just grind them up and make a weakly bitter tea out of them.  Keep adding to the pot, and don't throw out the old grounds.  Good stuff keeps coming out for days.  I just leave it on low on the stove and keep adding water and reishi.

So, save my old grounds? Seems a bit weird, but I'll try it. Anyway, I'd take pictures but - all I have is a cell phone. If I ever get more seriously into hunting, I'll look into buying a camera, but for now I'll just do without. I could take a pic of the tree, though, it looks pretty cool. The patch of conks is about one foot wide and two feet tall on the side of the tree. No idea how common that is, but it looks like a lot to me.

On that note - no, I'm not actually sure it's Reishi. But it's a conk! I'm pretty sure there are no deadly conks out there. I have to wonder since it's nearly all white, it doesn't have the color I see Reishi usually fruit with - but the rest of it looks right. Very young and I think they may not have gotten their color yet. I'll keep watching them over the next week or so. Even if they aren't Reishi, I'll eat them anyway. Whatever.

In Traditional CHinese Medicine, the medicine is often a tea, with weird and wonderful ingredients.  It is usually simmered for a few hours, and the liquid drunk, then the same batch has more water added an is boiled and drunk again the next day.

I have enjoyed those prescriptions I have gotten and had great admiration for the enormous gruesome bug pupae prescribed for my ex.  :rofl2: I spent some time trying to convince the chinese doctor to include Flying Squirrel Poo in my ex's prescription.  The doctor said "No! That's for your eyes!" My ex was not amused.

Most people don't like the way these teas make their house smell and some elect to get a hot plate and put it outside to boil.  Some people are just no fun!:laugh:

One fellow we knew had some strange skin disease that turned all his skin into hard, fibrous tissue.  Western doctors gave him four months to live, so having nothing to lose, he went to CHinatown.  THe teas they gave him cleared it all up in a few months.  The CHinese medicine folks were not particularly impressed with either his disease or his recovery.

If you are injured or so sick you need surgery, go see a western doctor.  For chronic illness or to stay healthy, go for Chinese Medicine.

How many Chinese people have you seen who are fat, or in a wheelchair when they are old like us whities ?

Reishi is going to be bright red/reddish brown from the start.  You probably found a different species, but nearly all are medicinal.  There's at least three different species of conk on this log.  Reishi(Ganoderma oregonese or possibly Ganoderma tsugae, since it's a downed Hemlock tree) in the foreground.  Which do yours look like?

Trivia question. . .Is she pointing towards the former top or the base of the tree?

None of those. Completely white. I'll try to get a cell phone pic later today. It's shady there though, so I don't know how well it will turn out.

Looking at the Climacodon septentrionale (Shelving Tooth) pictures. That's about all I know. Got some more today, drying them, so I can grind them up(haven't figured that part out yet).

Here's some bonus pics of another mushroom I found today, this guy's backyard is just CRAWLING with them....




No idea what they are, they have white spores that taste horrible. >_< But there's a lot of them.

I've never heard of anyone tasting the spores of a mushroom. Is there a particular reason for that? I'm not sure about the species, though. General appearance would suggest pluteus, but those have pink spore prints.

Regarding your shelf fungus: you might be spot on with climacodon septentrionale, but it's hard to see in those pics. In any case, I'd keep looking for something more 'common' in terms of medicinal mushrooms.

yeah that shelf fungus doesnt look like a reishi, nor does it look like a shelf fungus of great medicinal value
