I was in SF and bought these in Chinatown last week. Just thought I'd share. Wish I could grow conks this size...

They look like outdoor specimens, but not like any reishi I've ever seen. Where's the stem/attach point?

Underneath they have that auburn/orange color and texture of polypores. Pretty damn sure they're reishi. I have some stems, too--just didn't post pics of them. There was a guy in the "pharmacy" shop that spoke english and Chinese. I guess my accent wasn't very good for the species name. But we talked for a bit and he understood my reservations based on the visual aspect.

Out of curiosity--why do you ask? Does something look weird to you?

Those are Black Reishi (Ganoderma sinensis), not Red Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum).

Some of the selection in Vancouver chinatown. They have tons of reishi at all the medicine stores.

Both the red and the black. Ones to the right were about dinner plate sized.


A really huge Ganoderma, probably applanatum.


Some dried geckos between some reishi. Some things about chinatown are a little disturbing!

Nah apparently you're supposed to brew 'em up into a tea. There is two lizards per set, apparently one male and one female, belly to belly (well, not that their bellies exist anymore). At least this is what the person selling them told me. There are thousands of these geckos in chinatown, ranging from $2.80 - $10.00 CAD for a pair.

PS not tryin' to hijack this thread. I guess its all part of chinese medicine. However I'd much sooner take reishi than some boiled up lizard!

I live out on the Gulf Islands and am eager for reason to quest into Vancouver (in the name of my mushroom jones).


About how much did you spend on each conk of the black reishi?

With ferry fare and whatall, the price may be just too high to travel for.

10 USD per dried pound.  These taste AWFUL in tea compared to my homegrown Ganoderma lucidiums. :snowman:
