Step by step, first time in a long TIME (with pics)

Alright, so I am starting up here for the first time in a really long time (8 years, I think) and then I just grew once.  Mostly I learned how to pick cyans and azures in the pacNW, but now that I am in central PA, I have decided to give growing another shot.  In this thread, I will post what I am doing, provide pictures and answer any questions anyone may have.

My hope is that if you are following along and you see me mess something up, you will let me know and kindly guide me in the right direction.

I am using Pennington Wild Bird Seed.

It is mil, white millet, wheat, sunflower seed and calcium carbonate.

Crude Protein (9%)
Crude Fat (4%)
Crude Fiber (18%)
Calcium (.55 to .95%)

make sure you pick out the sunflower seeds. they float in water so just skim them out.

I have quart jars that are going to be used.  7 of them are going into a 17 quart pressure cooker when the time comes.  I drilled a 1/4" hole in the lids and filled with polyfil.

With the sunflower seed I like to use Fooman's tek, but slightly modified.

Get the sunflower seeds out by putting the mixture in a bucket of water. They'll float, skim them off.
Put it in a strainer/colander.
Rinse until the water comes out clear, then rinse some more.
Get a pot of water boiling, shut off the heat, dump your seeds in, put a cover on it, and let it sit for 30 minutes. Fooman's suggests an hour, but my kernels usually rupture if I do one hour, so I do 30 and it's perfect every time.
Dump them back into your colander.
Load up your jars 3/4 max, because they'll expand even more in your pressure cooker.
Stick them in there, when the weight begins to rock back and forth lower the heat as low as possible, but so the weight still gently rocks back and forth.
Let them pressure cook for one hour.
Let cool overnight, and make sure you open your PC in a sterile/still air environment.

You should research your jar techniques, and bulk techniques. I'm going to make a tutorial within a month or so here, just going through some old pictures and putting them together in chronological order. :grin:

This is very good advice, but you may want to pc for 1.5 hours.

Just make sure you listen to the PC once in a while to hear for bubbling! If you don't hear it, then you have popcorn!! :grin:

Hmmm.  I pulled it through until I almost couldn't pull it.  More as in tighter or more surrounding the hole?  After I pulled it through I trimmed up both sides with scissors.  It was looking like some wild 70s bush before.

I am following the 6T WBS Tek, so instead of boiling/PCing now, I am soaking, skimming, soaking for 18 hours, draining like a mofo and then filling jars and PCing.

70's bush, that's good. :grin:

Just ball it up and stuff it in there, as long as it's filling the hole semi-tightly it's fine. You want gas to exchange through it, just no contaminants.

A cheap way for me to get polyfill is when they have like 2-for-1 sale on pillows for like 3$...

You don't have to do the 18 hour soak... not required. I've never had to and never will. Just more time to waste IMHO.

I used to use polyfill. But it's just not worth it.  It works as well or better to simply leave a hole in the top.  No need for it at all.

Pressure cooker with jars, just to see if they fit.



One of two large pots full of WBS and water.  Should I skim now, wait until just before I drain, or skim, refill with water, mix, skim and then let rest?

If you're starting out I'd advise making a glove box too.

Just a plastic tote bin, cut two holes in the side and work inside of it.

NEVER EVER PUT A FLAME INSIDE OF IT OR NEAR THE HOLES!!! Heed this warning!

For somebody that's a little newer to this I'd advise this for you instead of polyfil, I like it, but it's always a matter of preference.
Go to your post office and snag some free large postage envelopes, they're made of Tyvek. Just read closely and you'll see "Tyvek" somewhere on there, look closely..

Take your lid and punch four tiny holes in it. Cut circular pieces of Tyvek that are slightly larger than your jar lid rings.
Fill it with your grains then do this.

Ring
Tyvek
Lid

In other words, set your lid on the jar, place the tyvek on the lid, then tighten the ring onto it. You can PC Tyvek.

You will have to open your jars in your glove box to inoculate them, but it's easy. I've only had one contamination out of hundreds of jars, and that was because I pulled my arm out while the jar was open and let a friend knock a jar up with a syringe. The current from me pulling hand out, and another arm coming in brought some in with it. Other than that, I've never had a contamination.
