Look at Rastafarian children--they don't go to school or anything, and they abuse cannabis starting as early as 4 or 5 years of age. Yet Rastafarians sustain their own society.

okay.  and what exactly do rastafarians contribute to the scientific community, other than new strains of potent herb?  we can't base our education system off of some tiny fringe culture.  we are a world super-power.  and already battling absurd social inequality within our borders.  if we were to model our public education system off of something like that, do you realize what would happen?  all the rich kids would continue going to the most prestigious private schools and would be the only ones getting into university and able to contribute anything to society beyond manual labor.  and our GINI index would go through the fucking roof.  and we truly would be slaves at that point.

at least now, with public education, we at least have the slim chance to work up the ladder, as impossibly high as it may be.  we children born poor and disadvantaged at least have that hope.  if you take away public schooling, you erase that fucking hope and you seal the fate of having a mile high wall constructed between the rich and the poor.

So compulsory education's purpose is to rouse nationalism? :strokebeard:

Didn't you stand up and salute the flag every morning for over ~275 days out of the year for 13 years?

actually no

i can't remember the last age i had to say the pledge of allegiance.  it was some point in elementary school.  same with the national anthem over the intercom.  none of my middle schools (like 4 diff ones), nor my high school did that stuff.

but i'll admit, the pledge is some bullshit, and while i feel school should be compulsory, it absolutely should not.

Fuck no. And I never recited the pledge of allegiance whenever the teacher wasn't looking at me.

did you even read my post?  i was talking about battling social inequality in our own country.  i only mentioned america's "super-power" status in passing, and that's more because we hold a very great influence in the world economy, and if we were to face a sudden significant economic shift, the balance of the world economy would be greatly upset and would fuck shit up.  also, do you really want the country to become more poor?  could you really imagine the common man being MORE poor, and the fuckers at the top garnering MORE wealth?

i hope you guys realize that i am actually a political dissident.  chomsky is one of my favorite authors.  hell, i'm in the fucking czech republic working on a farm for fuck's sake, simply because i wanted to get the fuck out of america and stop dealing with its bullshit.  but i suppose my definition of what makes america terrible is different from yours, because i'm a bleeding-heart liberal.  i think it's absurd that the wealthiest 5% own 68% of the wealth and a fucking travesty to all that's good and american that that proportion is getting worse.  i think it's absurd that in the past 8 years, a very significant proportion of the top Fortune 500 companies were able to jump through so many loopholes, that some of the most profit garnering companies were able to avoid paying any taxes whatsoever.  and given that, i think it's ESPECIALLY absurd that the average working-poor can't get fucking healthcare because private firms are allowed to simply deny you insurance if you're unable to pay their obscene fees.

but for all my gripes, i am 100% thankful for public education and the opportunities i'd received as a result.

well, considering i exist in the world and i am a being capable of empathy, i'm often willing to make concessions for the greater good.

btw.  what has that got to do with anything?  that isn't even relevant.

okay, now i really am done with this thread.  unless someone other than poid posts, that is.

it isn't fucking relevant.  i've already stated about 10 times that i am grateful of public education, through it i was able to achieve things that would otherwise be out of my reach.  similarly, given that that exact same opportunity is available to others, i'm supporting their ability to achieve their goals, the entire working-poor's ability to achieve a more comfortable life in hopefully a less submissive postion, and the entire fucking world's ability to not experience yet more economic crises caused by a super-powers crushing fall into an economic abyss.

so by supporting public education, i'm both looking out for myself, and the world.  therefore, your question is not fucking relevant.

and i never requested you don't post.  it's just that in my humble opinion, your posts are so trite and irrelevant that they're not worth my time.  that's your answer.  that's my stance.  i'm about to just hide the thread because i'm banging my head on a brick wall here.

Basically, you support compulsory education because there is currently no better alternative--this is like voting for either a douche, or a turd. :glittershitz:

I was going to post that I was glad that the three of us could get our opinions out there in a respectable manner, even if it meant we didn't reach a reasonable conclusion or solution to this.

Let's let sleeping dogs lie, this is starting to go nowhere - or somewhere it shouldn't - fast.

I am not grateful for public education hence why I home school my son. I am his teacher. If he fails I will have no one to blame but myself. This is how it should be.
