Lasik Eye Surgery Experience?

So I am planning on getting this done here in Toronto, Canada.

Have any of you undergone the procedure?  If you have I would like to know your experience, and exactly what technology/procedure you went through.

Also any details about your eyes (i.e. prescription, condition, pupils).

I had my first assessment during the week and it turns out my eyes are in good shape. 
About -3 nearsightedness + astigmatism.

So, it's like this:

-I am in the clear for the Lasik procedure.  Cost = $2500

BUT:

-I have larger than average pupils (obviously).  This means that there is a chance that the Lasik procedure will results in me seeing halos/glare at night.

-Thus, they have "recommended" I do the new Custom Lasik Procedure.  It is the latest technology, that is more precise then the regular Lasik.

-Custom cost = $4000

-Custom includes a lifetime "warranty".  Whereas the regular has a 5 year.  If I ever need a touch up, it comes free of charge.



Have any of you gone through a similar process and had to choose between these options?  I have a friend that had the same prescription as me and also had larger pupils.  They recommended him the Custom aswell, but he opted for PRK.  For him, the possible difference was negligible and therefore not worth the extra money on the custom.  His eyes turned out just fine.  20/20.

I don't know.  In the end it is still a business.  But at the same time, the lifetime care seems to be worth it in the long run.

I dunno about the choice, but my dad got lasik and he swears by it. The look on his face when he could see, he was pretty thrilled
So whatever ya pick, im sure they'll do a good job man

im blind in my right eye and have had many things done to my  eyes  but ill tell u one thing really think about when u do things to ur eye because i see glare every day and i still to this day ( been 3 years) fuckign hate seeing glare also prob because they put oil into my eye to heal it up and u can never take all the oil out so i see little oil spots wen i look around

why not just were glasses ?

Your condition sounds pretty extreme and I would have to know more details about your experience to consider that outcome.

Why not wear glasses?  I never got used to them.  I only wear them at home.  I find them to be very uncomfortable.  I don't like the feel, I don't like the look.

I wear contact lenses 90% of the time.  And I can't deal with those things anymore.  It's been years that I've been putting these disgusting pieces of soft plastic in my eyes.  I buy 6 months worth for ~200$.  Each pair is supposed to be disposed of after 2 weeks, but I make em last for well over 2 months.  I have been using my current and last pair for +3 months.  I vowed not to re-up on contact lenses, and that I would get lasik before that the time came.  Because of contacts I got steyes in both of my eyes at one point.  And now, one of my eyelids looks like its kind of lazy compared to the other.  A friend of mine that that was a result of drug use.  That's not cool.

So I want to get lasik, not only for the possibility of having insanely crisp hawk vision at 15/20, but also freedom from glasses and contacts.

I do physical activities and glasses are just useless for that, and contacts, well, there's a limit to how many days you can go with them in continuously.  It's rotten.

Had it done 3 years ago.  Best money I ever spent.

Like you, I spent months browsing lasik forums, and reviewing the major types of lasers and procedures.  As far as the technology is concerned, I came to the conclusion that I think many people agree with:  The skill of your surgeon is the biggest factor, not necessarily the technology.

Unfortunately, if you live in any type of semi-populated area, you will find hundreds of ads with each physician advertised with any number of "catchphrases".

"Dr. So and so has done thousands of procedures..."
"Dr. So and so was rated insert city's name here best lasik surgeon".
"Dr. So and so has more experience than all of the other lasik surgeons who coincidentally claim that they are the most experienced".

It was difficult to sift through the details.  In the end, I found a surgeon who was actively participating in clinical trials for a laser company (bausch and lomb's laser).  I dug up his peer-reviewed clinical trial data. 

His actual numbers in a medical journal pretty much backed up the claims on his website.  Since they were peer-reviewed, I knew they weren't fraudulent or inflated.

I went in for an exam.  They told me my pupils were small.  They actually recommended the cheaper, non custom procedure because of this. At that point, I figured they were completely honest and not simply going after my money.

I went with the custom procedure anyway (probably dumb, but I reasoned that they were my eyes, and extra grand or so is worth it).

Went in with each eye about -4.25.  I came out seeing 15/20.  Better than normal vision.  No halos.  No "dry eye", no problems whatsoever.  In 3 years I've had no vision changes.

Paid close to 5k.  Included "touchups" for two years.  Never needed them.  I would gladly pay the same amount and do the whole thing again.  It was worth MORE than what I paid.
