Has anyone had it?

I have been poking around on the internets looking for information.  The one thing that really jumped out to me was that you are conscious during the procedure.

Can anyone give me any insight regarding the surgery experience?

My Girlfriends mother went through with the procedure a few years ago. She happened to be around, so I asked her a few questions about it for you.

the way shes telling it, 100% pain free and 100% effective, she was legally blind and now has near perfect vision. They also numb you eye, and use surgical tools to hold your eye open (there was no way she could blink during the procedure even if she tried) If your truly interested in getting your sight back, go for it.
its not like its a bad investment :wink:

My 70 yo grandma had it. She doesnt wear glasses now. They did one eye at time for her. Other than having to use special drops for 2 wks, she said it was simple and non painless.

I had it done as a graduation present.  It's awesome not having to wear glasses, though I'm starting to notice my vision getting worse again.  It's still way better than it was, but I hope I don't have to back for some sort of "touch-up" work.

Never had lasik.  And I can't recall anyone that has.  I just wanted to post this cus it could be relevant to anyone looking into this thread wondering how they can improve their vision.

Did it 4 years ago.  I don't recall how bad my vision was, but remember I wore something like -5.25 contacts.  I couldn't see my nightstand alarm clock that was 3-4 ft. away sometimes.

24 hrs. after Lasik my vision was 15/20.  Better than normal.  I've noticed no adverse effects 4 years later.

Yes, it's a bit weird getting the procedure done.  Especially so if you have seen lots of videos and KNOW what the surgeon is doing.  For example, your laying there thinking:  "Oh, he's slicing the lense off my eye now.....oh, now the laser is shooting and I can smell the inside tissue of my eye burning.....now he's running a metal object over my eye flattening out the flaps he sliced open earlier..."

But like someone mentioned, it's entirely painless.  You can't feel a thing.

I figured it would not hurt that much, but staring into a laser kinda weirds me out.  I imagine that I would have the sensation to move my eye.

Is it even possible to move the eye around during the procedure?

No there is no way to move your eye around. If I remember from watching a video they use tiny suction cups on the eye to keep it from moving as well as little grippers to keep you from blinking.

A friend of mine had it done, the only adverse affect was having a sensitivity to light for a few weeks. But it cleared up and now he has perfect vision.

I find it kind of creepy but some day I will get it done.

That is reassuring.  I had a rather silly fear of permanently damaging my vision by moving my eye around during the procedure.

my aunt had it 10 years ago or so and she hasn't worn glasses since.

my grandpa has had it about 10 times in the past year, well laser eye surgery at least. he pops in at the VA to get the surgery for 20 minutes then goes about his day. he says it doesn't hurt, but idk how reliable that is. he's been shot with a 12 gauge slug :lol:

The lasers can detect something like micrometers of movement.

Serious damage to your eye would be like cutting off a finger with a paperclip.  Sure, it can happen but...

I am glad it has went well for so many people. I have had an irrational fear of deteriorating vision, which I actually have invested a lot of worry in.

But damn, after your description badchad, they better have my head bolted tightly in. Do you mean your vision was 20/15 afterwards? I don't think 15/20 is better than normal.

How much is the surgery usually? And does anyone's insurance cover it? I would love to not wear glasses, even though I look real smart in them... :wink:

Silversoul and Badchad, how much did you guys pay for your surgeries and when did you have them done?

I am very interested in LASIK and can't wait until affordable, completely safe and reliable service can be purchased for $999.00 or lower.

I think it was a couple thousand.  I'm not sure because as I said, it was a graduation present, so I wasn't the one who paid for it.  I got it done back in '06.

This is what ive heard about it The LASIK flap never heals the LASIK flap can be easily dislodged from simple contact with the eye such as a finger poke. I dont know how true that is though.

I don't think you can quantitate how "easy" it is to dislodge a flap.  I do know that MANY pro athletes get it done, however it's controversial regarding athletes that take direct shots to the face and eyes (boxers, MMA guys).

There are some guys on sherdog (MMA forums) that discuss getting it done.
