Not if advances in medical technology have anything to say about it!  Ray Kurzweil, a prominent futurist, believes that in 15 years life expectancy will increase more than one year for each year that passes. In other words, by 2022 we will at least have the potential for biological immortality.  Problems of over-population and disparate resources still need to be solved, but at least humanity now has hope to solve the oldest problem of them all... Death.

That sort of thinking is nothing but pure fantasy.

We will never defeat death. We are facing an ecological catastrophe that will kill billions in the next century. This die-off is going to begin relatively soon.

Ray Kurzweil is simply in denial.

We will never get that far.

I've recently been following what Kurzweil has to say; he pops up on the Science channel quite often.  He has been on the money with most of his predictions in the past, and I'm with him on this latest one.  But, I don't think we'll achieve immortality in the classical sense.  In the next 25-30 years, processors will be powerful enough that we can essentially upload our consciousness to a computer, negating any need for nutrients.  So if our body gets too old, we'll be able to upload to a new one.  We won't live forever in a biological sense, but our brain/thoughts/consciousness will exist on a computer or a replacement body if we see fit.

Did he dream about dragons? Did he dream about deer? Did he whisper  he names of friends who were near?
What songs did they play, and how far away? Why did he whisper, why did she scream?
What does the sound of a screen door mean?
Who talks on the hill? Who goes to the cellar, can you feel the chill? Where does the river, when will the wind?
How far are the mountains? Where do they end? Why would the church?
Did the service begin? Tell me who died, and tell me who cried.
Help me hide in the skin of a deer, my zippered-up bag in the mouth of a stag so swiftly I go through rows of does,
it flows, it flows, it flows, it flows all over the hill where the green grass grows.

I'm quite skeptical of your claim that people reincarnate.

Do you really think that you can lean on your drug experiences as proof for any such theories, even on a subjective level?

I will never understand why so many people who take psychedelics are prone to believe they have found the answers to life's great mysteries within the nuances of their psychedelic experiences.

You can't underestimate the power of experience. Sometime merely experiencing something can be more powerful than any scientific theory.

Sometimes (a lot of times) it seems as if people cling too tightly to their experiences, as if they feel that their own mental (not to mention, drug-induced) experiences should not be subject to scientific analysis.

Can these folks (speak up, because a lot of TPE's posters fit into this category) really claim to be more elite thinkers than more logically-minded individuals?

Are they afraid that they will have weaker trips if they don't surrender themselves wholly to the prospect of every suggestion of their mind, while on the psychedelic of their choice, must be totally infalliable?

It seems very arrogant to me.

I have probably done more psychedelics than 99% of the population, but I don't feel comfortable claiming I have any proof of life after death or alternate realities.

I don't think that my tendency to analyze the effects of my trips in a rational manner hinders me from experiencing the same awe and reaping the same creative benefits from psychedelics as people who are more "free thinkers."

Read some of the trip reports in my journal.

I don't feel the need to insist that I receive divine messages from psychedelics, and I am honest enough to admit that the things I experience are likely just the effects of drugs.

There are alot of things in life which i don't have verifiable scientific proof for but i still deeply believe in. I'm think most people are the same. I think a classic example of this is love. I don't analyse that i love my mother or that she loves me, i have experienced it, i know its true, that's enough for me. Some people feel that it is merely chemical reactions in the brain, i feel its something sacred, people usually won't judge me for this. Psychedelic experiences are often the same. People experience sacred things and they believe in them, only difference is that people will often look down on them for doing this.

I see your point.

I think it goes both ways though.

People in TPE usually think I am unreasonable or I just must not have broken though like they have  since I tend to question some of the more incredible claims they make.

I find it odd that you're so emphatically pessimistic; why not say that the defeat of death is unlikely, or far off in the future, or only available to the rich (as it most likely will be when we first succeed)?  Never is a strong word... people used to think that human beings would never fly or go to the Moon.  If you had the chance for immortality, would you take it or would you prefer "dying to remember what you lived to forget" as you so poetically commented?

Well, it is of my own opinion that we don't have that much time.

You add all of this up and you get resource wars, mass starvation and a die-off unlike anything we have ever seen. Only the few (with means) will survive and even then that is questionable. Science will not progress any further once the system stops in its tracks and this WILL happen due to resource wars. All minds will be focused on securing resources to save their own asses, not transcending death via technology.

To think that technology is going to save us is not only laughable, but certifiably insane. We should have had bases on the moon by now, but we chose to focus on our military industrial complexes instead because of money and greed.

Our civilization is ending as a result of the technologies that we have unleashed. When coupled with the already changing climate, its a perfect storm.

Yes, because as the Buddha realized, suffering is necessary. It is a prerequisite for enlightenment/existence. However, it really only "occurs" once; as it is incomprehensible to us. Only during certain moments of our life do we catch glimpses of it; Déjà Vu, synchronicities etc.

"All opposites are of God, therefore man must bend to this burden; and in so doing he finds that God in his "oppositeness" has taken possession of him, incarnated himself in him. He becomes a vessel filled with divine conflict. We rightly associate the idea of suffering with a state in which the opposites violently collide with one another, and we hesitate to describe such a painful experience as being "redeemed." Yet it cannot be denied that the great symbol of the Christian faith, the Cross, upon which hangs the suffering figure of the Redeemer, has been emphatically held up before the eyes of Christians for nearly two thousand years. This picture is completed by two thieves, one of whom goes down to hell, the other to paradise. One could hardly imagine a better representation of the "oppositeness" of the central Christian symbol. Why this inevitable product of Christian psychology should signify redemption is difficult to see, except that the conscious recognition of the opposites, painful though it may be at the moment, does bring with it a definite feeling of deliverance. It is on the one hand a deliverance from the distressing state of dull and helpless unconsciousness, and on the other hand a growing awareness of God's oppositeness, in which man can participate if he does not shrink from being wounded by the dividing sword which is Christ. Only through the most extreme and most menacing conflict does the Christian experience deliverance into divinity, always provided that he does not break, but accepts the burden of being marked out by God. In this way alone can the image of God realize itself in him, and God become man...

...Because the image of God pervades the whole human sphere and makes mankind its involuntary exponent, it is just possible that the four-hundred-year-old schism in the Church and the present division of the political world into two hostile camps are both expressions of the unrecognized polarity of the dominant archetype." - Carl Jung, 'Answer to Job'

If you honestly believe in inevitable progress led by scientific materialism, then you're right.

However, most of us have realized that the promises of inevitable progress are nothing but a lie. We have not been delivered to any kind of promise land; all we have been led to is disillusionment with our existential heritage. Just look around you.

The subjugated sector of mankind is beginning to realize this, hence our awakening to our peril. Unfortunately fascism tends to prevail in such situations where fear is high.

I agree we are not heading into an angelic realm.  But if you can figure out what part of the brain is responsible for consciousness and experience, then you can change experience into what ever you wish.

I was led to these conclusions. I had the experiences before I was able to understand what they were conveying.

I had to study for years to understand what my trips were telling me. To think that these ideas just presented themselves to me during my trips is preposterous. I am not "leaning" on my trips for support; I have found numerous accounts from the past centuries of knowledge that back up my experiences, including scientific theories. Yet, I am not claiming to know the truth, because truth is entirely subjective.

I had experiences that were later validated by devoted reflection and reading upon relative subjects. As my trips progressed, they became more and more easy to comprehend. I didn't trip and just come to these conclusions.

Of course all truth is subjective, to think otherwise is to only confuse yourself with ego.

Man's ability to "defeat" death lies entirely upon his ability to transcend it by means of self-knowledge. To think that we are going to download ourselves is preposterous, beyond-wishful thinking. To believe that we will defeat death by technology is merely a last-ditch effort of the ego to maintain control and deny the inevitable, which our species is vehemently guilty of.

We don't have that much time, plain and simple. Technology isn't going to save us from our inevitable fate on this planet.

Man is on this planet to figure himself out, not escape death to dwell in some solid-state microchip.

Man's eternal nature lies in his ability to comprehend the universe, which is eternal. When man realizes his eternal nature, that alone is transcending death.
