Police say mushroom lab may have been there for a while
Thursday, August 27, 2009 3:00 AM

Police say the mushroom lab found on Maupin Avenue may have been in operation for months or years.

And they are trying to determine if any of the mood-altering mushrooms were sold.

Police busted the lab Wednesday evening in the home of Charles Edward "Eddie" Earnhardt IV.

Deputy Chief Steve Whitley of the Salisbury Police Department described Earnhardt as a learned man, but a bit eccentric.

Earnhardt's pharmacy diploma from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill hangs on the wall near the lab.

Earnhardt, 53, is in Rowan Regional Medical Center, where his condition has improved.

Police are waiting to confer with District Attorney Bill Kenerly to decide on what charges to file.

Police accustomed to methamphetamine labs weren't sure what they had found. Whitley described it as a fully equipped science lab, with manure and oats and other additives.

Whitley was struck by the stark difference between the outside and inside of Earnhardt's house.

"Outside it looks like little suburbia — a church mouse's home É it looked like crap on the inside, the stink É a mushroom lab," Whitley said.

"Given the amount of stuff, the dozens of test tubes, the Mason jars, it was way above personal consumption. There was a lot of stuff there."

Police say there is no danger to the neighbors, but have taken steps to ensure the house is cleaned thoroughly.

Whitley said the city's codes enforcement and the Rowan County Health Department will clean up the house.

This is not the first time police have been to Earnhardt's home.

In November 2007, he held authorities at bay for nearly an hour after a fight with a neighbor.

He fired several shots at the neighbor. When police responded, he refused to surrender.

He eventually surrendered and was placed under $100,000 bond on multiple charges, including possession of marijuana. Police seized several weapons and marijuana.

A month later, he was charged with intimidating a witness related to the earlier fracas.

According to the N.C. Department of Corrections, Earnhardt received a suspended sentence in November 2008 with 60 months of suspended probation.

Discovery of the mushroom lab came through a routine welfare check.

Earnhardt's father had been unable to contact him for two days or more. When he went to his son's home, he found the car there, along with several day's of mail in the mailbox.

Unable to get a response, he called police, who responded with First Responders.

Based on the number of test tubes in the mushroom lab we concluded that he was selling

Who ever the writer and editor are they should be fired.
This makes no sense. They tell us his conditions improving and that theres no charges filed,
But he is in the hospital. How did he get sick/injured? -no idea?

He was growing mushrooms and police are waiting to decide if charges are filed?
No you dumb fuck (reporter) Police are waiting for tests to see if he was growing ILLEGAL mushrooms.
Apparently this guy thinks growing shitake is illegal too.

You still haven't even suggested illegality dumb shit-

Dirty isn't illegal- you have to prove that they were actives first. The officials would have no right to go in again without consent or a court order. This came from the cop, so im guessing he has already told the reporter that he thinks they are active shrooms- and that prolly got edited out, without correcting anything else for linear consistency.

This article ends without saying whether or not he's in custody at the hospital or will go to lock up upon release.

Worthless story.

That could mean he was growing more edibles than he could eat.
Mushrooms are not always grown for eating either.
What the fuck kind of people are involved in this?
-So far i gather theres an elderly man,
-an old man with a PHD in pharmacology, with a dirty house (inside only,) that may have been growing fungus of some        kind. And he is in the hospital for unknown reasons.(they didnt even say he was found in the house  )
-A cop who lacks profesionalism; talking to much about a man who is not only still considered innocent, but not even charged with anything.
and finally,
-A reporter who can't write a coherent story.

That article is nothing but a list of facts and statements leading to nothing.

Are oats commonly used for growing Psilocybes, or any other mushroom for that matter?

You can use them, but it is not common. That was a big part of what leads me to believe the found no actual fruits.
I would laugh my ass off if they guy had water damage and he was culturing the molds he found in the house, lol.

Really, im baffled by this article. Do you think a man with a PHD in pharmacy would be growing out cubes or something on oats? I mean, its possible, but:

I doubt the cop has ever smelled a "mushroom lab" or could properly say something in that house was an "additive" for use in growing mushrooms. Hell what "fully equipped" science lab do you see while getting an associates in criminal justice? Lol, irresponsible speculation FTW. I wish i was this guy's lawyer.

Manure is somewhat more worthy of talking about. I guess they should focus on the shit more. lol

Who thinks cops can actually identify psychedelic mushroooms? When you're holding a ziplock baggy full of dried mushrooms during a traffic stop its quite obvious. But what if i was growing pounds of edible in my basement? Do you think the cop would think anything but "psychedelic mushrooms"?

Excellent point.
Offhand, the only non-chemical-assay field-test I can think of offhand would be  to score a suspect sample with a knife or something and see if it turns blue. Even that's not 100% reliable, iirc.

Fungiphobia at it's finest.

I love the looks people give me when they see me on my belly in the dirt studying a fucking mushroom. They ask me what I am doing and get freaked out when I reply:

"Studying mushrooms".

People always assume the worst.

Now News 14 Carolina says:

"Earnhardt is in the hospital, recovering from what investigators think was a bad reaction to the lab environment. Investigators say he is in stable condition."
