Small scale mushrooms producers busted in Utah

Logan police and the Cache/Rich Drug Task Force arrested a Logan couple Thursday on suspicion of cultivating illegal mushrooms.

Michael Ryan Goertemiller, 27, and Elizabeth Smith, 21, were arrested Thursday at about 9:30 p.m. on first-degree felony charges of cultivating mushrooms and possession of mushrooms with the intent to distribute, task force commander Greg Ridler said. The mushrooms were reportedly found at an apartment the couple shared at 440 S. 100 East.

"Within a week, he (Goertemiller) would have had about $1,000 worth of mushrooms ready for sale," task force detective Alan Hodges said.

The drugs were discovered after police responded earlier that day to a domestic dispute between the couple at a relative's house, Hodges said. Goertemiller reportedly had a knife and was threatening to commit suicide.

During the investigation of the alleged domestic violence, information about the mushrooms was revealed to officers, Ridler said.

The drug task force, along with a drug-sniffing police dog, found the mushrooms during a search of the couple's home about 7:30 p.m. The dog was able to smell drug paraphernalia in the apartment, Hodges said.

"He (the dog) hit on some marijuana pipes," He said.

Along with the pipes, investigators found three large Tupperware containers with mushrooms in various stages of growth, several scales allegedly used for weighing drugs and equipment used to dry the mushrooms before consumption, Hodges said.

"There were (also) three bags (of mushrooms) packaged up and ready to go for $70 a piece," Hodges said.

Investigators believe the couple had been cultivating the mushrooms since February or March, Hodges said.

In addition to the drug charges, Goertemiller was also charged with a class-A misdemeanor assault, a third-degree felony reckless endangerment, a class-B charge of damaging a communication device, a class-A misdemeanor charge of making threats with a weapon and a class-A misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Smith was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, a class-A misdemeanor, and child endangerment, a second-degree felony.

The couple reportedly have an 18-month-old child that lives in the apartment where the mushrooms were allegedly found.
