Hallucinogenic mushrooms seized during bust
By MARLA TONCRAY - Staff Writer
AUGUSTA - Buffalo Trace/Gateway Areas Narcotics Task Force agents said they seized several ounces of hallucinogenic mushrooms during a drug bust in Augusta Wednesday.
Jacob High, 20, of Turtle Creek Road, Augusta, was arrested and charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, psilocybin mushrooms. High was also charged with possession of marijuana. The mushrooms can sell for as much as $10 per gram and only one ounce contains 27 grams, officials said.
"We have been working with the Bracken County Sheriff's office and Augusta Police Department on this case for several months," said a BT/GANTF agent.
Drug enforcement agents said heavy traffic on the street tipped them off to the alleged drug activity.
"This is a dead end street in a small community. There was a lot of traffic coming in and out of the house. We were at the home from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. serving the search warrant and then conducting the search of the property. In that time four or five cars came down the street toward the house. That's a lot of people getting lost and asking for directions," said the agent.
Drivers and passengers in the vehicles were stopped and questioned by police personnel on the scene.
The suspect was not at home when agents arrived. Shortly after, he was stopped in one of the approaching vehicles, at which time agents said a bag of marijuana was found under the seat of the vehicle.
The task force was assisted in the investigation by the Bracken County Sheriff's Office, Augusta Police Department, Maysville Police Department and Maysville police K-9 Bartje and the Kentucky State Police.
Hallucinogens are among the oldest known group of drugs that have been used for their ability to alter human perception and mood. For centuries, many of the naturally occurring hallucinogens found in plants and fungi have been used for medical, social and religious practices. In more recent years, a number of synthetic hallucinogens have been produced, some of which are much more potent than their naturally occurring counterparts.
Psilocybin and psilocyn are both chemicals obtained from certain mushrooms found in Mexico and Central America. Dried mushrooms contain about 0.2 to 0.4 percent psilocybin and only trace amounts of psilocyn. The hallucinogenic dose of both substances is about four to eight milligrams or about 2 grams of mushroom with effects lasting for about six hours. Both psilocybin and psilocyn can be produced synthetically.

No wonder this heat bag got caught!!!!!!
-------------------- One of the reasons marijuana is illegal today because growers in the 30s lobbied against hemp farmers -- they saw it as competition, because It is not chemically addictive as is nicotine, alcohol, or caffeine.
