Pot bust largest in Canadian history Steve Fairbairn Canadian Press
Monday, January 12, 2004
TORONTO -- A marijuana farm discovered inside a former brewery on the weekend was no "ma-and-pa operation," police said Monday after uncovering what they described as the largest and most sophisticated setup of its kind in Canada.
Three days after police raided the building in Barrie, Ont., an hour's drive north of Toronto, investigators held a news conference to describe the bust that prompted charges against nine people.
The footage showed vats blossoming with marijuana plants and an electrical room where hydro was used to facilitate the growing process.
"This is not a ma-and-pa operation," said Barrie Police Chief Wayne Frechette.
The former brewery was raided Saturday by roughly 100 Barrie and provincial police officers acting on a tip.
Thousands of plants were discovered growing in several locations all over the building, including inside the beer vats.
Millions of commuters travelling across southern Ontario along Highway 400 have driven past the landmark building, which features huge windows just metres from the busy thoroughfare.
The six-lane highway is the main route to cottage and ski country from Toronto and is jammed with cars almost every weekend.
A second huge marijuana grow house was discovered just north of the city on Sunday when police raided a commercial building.
Vaughn Collins, OPP deputy commissioner, said the brewery operation is "the largest and most sophisticated I'm aware of in Canada."
Collins added that police have control of the building under a search warrant, and that the remaining forensic work will likely take weeks to complete. He also said that commercial marijuana factories have reached epidemic proportions, with an estimated 15,000 in Ontario.
"Much of Ontario marijuana is destined for U.S. markets, and it's often traded for cocaine brought back into Canada," said Collins.

Wow...and to think how many times I've driven right by that place. If only I had of known...

Oh man... what a waste. If only cannabis were legal. Then places like that could operate with police protection, and honest citizens could safely purchase quality buds. But NO, instead we have a stupid drug war.

Thats gotta put somekind of dent in the market.I wonder how long till The effects are felt, whether its shortages or higher prices.Last year in my city they busted a couple guys bringing in herb on the train from NYC,about 150 pounds. And that had a HUGE impact on the local market for about a month,i cant imagine that a loss as big as the one in Canada big wouldnt do the same only on a bigger scale.
