?Mushroom? lab found in city apartment

SCOTT DOLAN, Gazette Staff Writer April 25, 2003

TAUNTON -- Police investigating an alleged domestic fight between a boyfriend and girlfriend early yesterday morning stumbled upon the first hallucinogenic mushroomgrowing laboratory found in the city?s history.
Police had just arrested 31-year-old Thomas McGann at his Farms of Indian Pond condominium, 59 Linden St., around 4:15 a.m. after he had allegedly grabbed his girlfriend by the throat and later slapped her, Bristol County Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth S. Pereira said.

McGann was not fully dressed when he was arrested, and his girlfriend, 24-year-old Stephanie Taylor, supposedly gave Patrolman Jeffrey Martin permission to enter a room to get McGann some more clothes, Pereira said.

While in the room, Martin noticed the glow of a plant-growing lamp coming from a partially open closet door. Upon closer inspection he allegedly found 13 marijuana plants and an elaborate set up for growing mushrooms with the hallucinogen psylocybin, police said,

"You don?t often get people growing mushrooms around here," Vice Det. Sgt. Michael Grundy said. "Usually mushrooms are imported. They originate in Mexico."

Police allege that McGann, a college graduate working in the technology field, downloaded how-to guides from the Internet on growing marijuana and mushrooms. The start up kit for the mushrooms costed him about $100, and the drug sells on the street for about $200 an ounce, Grundy said.

McGann allegedly had several hundred mushroom pods growing and two bags of cultivated mushrooms, weighing about a pound, police said.

He allegedly had a collection of "spore syringes" used for injecting the fungus into fertilized soil in jars, Grundy said.

Police charged McGann with domestic assault and battery, cultivation of a Class C hallucinogen, possession of a Class C drug, cultivation of marijuana, possession of marijuana and drug conspiracy.

At the time of his arrest, McGann already had a pending case against his for allegedly assaulting Taylor, who he has dated for several years and with whom he has a child.

In Taunton District Court later in the day, McGann?s attorney, James H. Fagan, acknowledged that the court could hold McGann without bail for 60 days. But Fagan argued that police had no evidence that McGann was selling the drugs.

Judge Kevan J. Cunningham decided not to hold McGann without bail, but imposed bail in the amount of $7,500 cash or $75,000 with surety. He also issued Taylor a six-month restraining order against McGann.

Police said they intend to charge Taylor with possession of the hallucinogenic mushrooms, marijuana and for conspiracy, but intend to have her summonsed instead of arresteddue to her cooperation.

McGann is next scheduled to appear in court on May 8.

Not sure exactly where this story originated from, but it is in the North East of the US. I highly doubt any substantial amount of mushrooms are imported from Mexico, especially that far north! If they really believe that then they really have no idea how big their mushroom "problem" is.

This shows why its good to have as few as possibl people know about any grows. If you ever piss them off, they'll sell you out at the first chance then later regret it.
