too little humidity?
    #10945500 -

I built this fC, i had a coolmist inside, but it could only get my humidity up to like 60-85 i had some cakes inside for about 5 days at that humidity, then i bought a ultrasonic and now i get proper humidty, however, the cakes that i put in first have now been in for 17 days, with no pins. i added cakes in there a week ago and they already have pins.  do you think i should redunk the ones that never pinned?
I keep thinking that maybe they dried out when the humidity was too low.

in my experience an ultrasonic is overkill.

I can tell you that if you did put a cool mist inside your FC, that is your problem. You want it on the outside with a hose or similar piping the air into the FC. Inside it will reach a sort of humidity equilibrium, if it is taking in air that is already pretty humid.

it is normal for cakes to dry somewhat before pinning. but there are other major factors involved(temp. & FAE). I get the feeling that FAE may be your biggest problem from what little details you gave. personally I wouldn't recommend dunking, but I'm sure some would debate that...

For FAE i have a fan pumping air out 15 minutes on/1:15 minutes off. also an aquarium pump.  On the contrary, my understanding is that the coolmist is better inside the FC.

I kind of want to change my question though..
Would it be bad to redunk unpinned cakes?

I wouldn't re-dunk...

with the cool mist on the outside you can run it 24/7 and it will give constant humidity and FAE without any other fans, humidifiers, etc.

You can redunk if you like.  If you pick them up and they feel pretty light, they are dry.

If that is the case, I would say dunk them. I have done it before, and it definitely works.

I have never ran the cool-mist set up, but I have read numerous threads regarding a cool mist hooked up to a mono-tub and many frown on it cause it drys out your substrate. May have dryed them out, do the seem dry? If not then I would go with avorgs advice on FAE.

Are they rolled?  Often times cakes that are being stubborn will pin immediately after being rolled.  Also, high temperature is quite often the culprit.

Personally I don't understand the fanaticism for FAE and humidity on this board, it seems to be the standard answer for all pinning problems, which is just plain dumb since even the most cranially deficient newbies have brushed over the PF guide where FAE and humidity repeatedly hammered in to them.  Speaking empirically, and not in the speculative pseudo-scientific BS that board feeds off of, fanning the piss out of your FC is not going to do anything.  Pop two identical cloned and cased pans of substrate in identical FCs.  Fan one, don't fan the other, watch what happens.

HELLO, NUBCAKES.  ARE YOU HAVING CONTAMINATION ISSUES?  WELL, YOU MUST NOT BE AWARE OF THE MAGICAL FORCE OF BACTERIAL ENDOSPORES.  E-N-D-O-S-P-O-R-E-S.  SPELL IT OUT, YOU GOD DAMN NUBLETS, BECAUSE IT WHAT CAUSES EVERY CONTAMINATION KNOWN TO MAN.  ENDOSPORES HAPPEN WHEN YOU DO NOT PRESSURE COOK AT 15 PSI FOR AT LEAST 6 HOURS.  LIKE A FUCKING VIETCONG IN HIS CAVE, THESE RELENTLESS COCKSUCKSERS CAN GET FUCKING FRIED AND STILL POP OUT OF YOUR GRAIN AND FUCK ALL YOUR SHIT RIGHT UP!!  GETTING CONTAMINATIONS?  WELL OBVIOUSLY, YOU DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ENDOSPORES!!

The reason FAE and humidity are usually the standard answers are because they are usually the problems.

Of course, fanning the piss out of your fruiting chamber is going to dry it out, especially if you have humidity problems.  With the shotgun FC, fanning is not even that necessary. The temperature differentials create natural airflow, thus the need for fanning to achieve FAE is not essential.

I don't see how you think these are not important factors in inducing pinning.

Your cakes have dried out... most likely quite a bit.  If I were you I would definitely redunk them.  My first attempt at cakes dried out due to humidity problems, and they never really recovered until I dunked them again.
