You probably shouldn't have chucked anything, and you should probably get a camera and take some pics.

Metabolites are not cause for concern, and if that was "black pin mold" or the start of it, you would eventually see it develop in those spots had you been patient and given it some time -- a couple of days and you would have known.

Let this be lesson learned and setup an extra bin for quarantine, this way you can take suspicious jars and isolate them.

Personally I *really* think you made a mistake chuckin them.

yea at least verm and rice flour isn't that much money. i still have 8 burma cakes, i do have a camera, it's an older digital camera, i'll try to see if i can get something online in the next few minutes.

the little black spots havn't grown at all in 2 days, but the growth on one of them is suspicious, then again, i'm not an expert, i'm just new to all of this. It's very interesting and i will continue my study and not give up. pics coming soon.

yeah get through a couple grows and all this mysticism will begin to clarify... the pictures on this site sometimes doesn't do any justice to this hobby and nothing works better than seeing stuff with your own eyes.  It's so damn easy to get impatient through all this, but trust me, a few runs through and you'll be the one answering the questions as opposed to asking them (the majority of time)...
Those pics will definitely help, try to get them as well lit and clear as possible, it'll make everybody else's jobs a little easier.

if you shake the cake so it becomes loose in the jar can that cause bruising?

yes it can, you shouldn't shake a brf jar.  Grain only for that trick.

i took pics but they were not clear enough really, my camera sucks....

i shoook it loose from the jar because i had read in another thread that was a good way to get the metabolites to go away because they may be caused by excessive moisture build-up in spots stuck against the glass and what not. mabe not the greatest idea, i tried it tho.

just birthed 3 of them, going to go find some straw and do an outdoor patch with 2 of them that had the bigger spots, and the other 3 are almost finished colonizing, hopefully it turns out

the moister the soil (without being too saturated) the better.  Use hydrated lime as a ph buffer at 10%, gypsum at 5%, coffee at 5%, 40% straw or hay, 40% horse/sheep/cow poo.  Cover the top with leaves, or something to hold the humidity in with (vermiculite, or perlite, or whatever you think does the trick).  Just eye it out, if you mix this stuff together it should be fine.  No sterilization needed.

should that be ground coffee, or cooked coffee? if it's cooked, is watered down exresso ok? there is a place next door, that is how they make their coffee.

do you mean just lay it all out on the ground or bury it in the dirt? and then cover with leaves? should i lightly wet the leaves every day if i do lay leaves over the patch?
i'm not sure what you mean by covering with vermicluite or perlite.

oh and congrats on post number 420

grass clippings?  If you can find some tall grass with seeds, remove the seed end, and then pasturize with the poo it should work fine.  I used hay, people find that a little questionable because of the high nutrient content (supposedly) within it, along with sheep poo, which some people have questioned, but indeed it works fine.  You simply need a substrate from a grain feeding animal which quickly passes things through it's system.  Questionable, yes, but definitely working, and working well.  I'll post more pics soon but I'm just so friggin tired, I won't do that till I wake up, unless I have time before work.

I should have a dry weight of some of the harvest -- keeping in mind things have really started to pic up and I'm seeing mad pins, and these big ones keep falling over.  The last one severed completely but the viel was close to coming off so I picked it off and then set aside for printing.  I've got a nice thick print offa one and expect the same for the next 2 (As I pulled another one off of my pf cakes).

One had a 10g stem.  And I can tell you that cap sure was heavy... no weight on it and I probably won't bother till it's done printing and had time to dry.  Still lots of little pins developing and the count is over 50 now.  The 2nd mono tub is starting to go better as well.  I can tell you that the next week or so is gunna be *REALLY* sweet...

Trust me there's a reason why certain substrates work and others fail, because if you use proper technique you can get a good feel for what works and what doesn't and as to why.

Some other alternatives as well:
Coir.
a coconut....(though it developed trich I would still insist that it could be made to work, maybe leave the milk and/or the meat in -- and inject with lc; as well as the fact that one single failure doesn't disprove it's ability to work.
Supposedly puppy chow (which could make sense as it contains grain related products in it as filler).
probably even one of them infomercial sobakawa pillow stuffings.
various grains.
or not at all.
There are all sorts of additives, find out what it does and generally the more additives mixed right will equal more substrate and therefore increase your yeilds, generally the more the merrier.

Each component has a reason to be a positive contributor to a substrate.  The straw aids in increasing the mycellium's ability to spread and creates air pockets which assist with GE/FAE.  A small amount of verm in th substrate could be used for water retention/hydration.  The gypsum and lime used as ph buffers, the coffee is a source of nitrogen but is slightly acidic so the ph buffers are used to neutralize the negative effects of ph variance towards contamn issues and as I would tend to think is the same as for plants, nutrient uptake (as it is not linear across the ph scale).

It's pretty straight forward, the same thing one has to deal with growing pot, or any plant for that matter -- substrates work much the same for all of the above and have some fairly easy to grasp reasons.

I'm thinking I'll have so much lc and so many sporeprints and syringes and spare bags, I ought to be-able to come up with some interesting tests shortly, just for the hell of it.

yea man i'd love to see some pics if i succeed in this project i'll take some also. Today i found a 15 kilo bag of sheep poo at the plant nursery, and i found out on this forum after searching for straw replacement, i found out you can get it at art and craft shops, so i found 2 smaller bails at Micheals in town. i have lime and gypsum, i can get spent grains of coffee next door. i have some verm and perlite kickin around. let's get this recipe straight now.

40% straw
40% sheep poo
10% lime
5% gypsum
5% used coffee

each patch will have about 6 liters of poo and same amount of straw/hay and one cake crumbled.

should i pasteurize the straw with lime and soap like in the rr videos, or is it cool to just throw all the ingredients in a tub the way i bought them and mix them up and then bring them to the forest?

should i also mix in some vermiculite or is that not needed?

and i'm still not sure if i bury this or lay it on the ground.

i'm thinking of just laying the mix on the ground in a couple patches under some trees in the woods and covering with leaves and wetting the leaves daily and moving the leaves around daily also.

when looking for a spot , what should i look for?

i know i have a too many questions aaaaah. lol :P

shit , ten minutes to 4:20 pm, better turn on the vape.

so i have everything i need, but then ppl are saying on other threads that you don't mix poo with your substrate/hay, and only use it for casing layers. and to layer it , i'm not sure what to do man, should i just stick with the plan, and make layers of this mix and add the brf cakes between the layers? patch with leaves, and water each evening?

is this gonna work with this method?

just shred your cakes up, mix everything together, the mycellium will form a new network and eventually fruit.  Be sure to keep it on the dryer side for the first week or two, then water it good to trigger pinning especially if you see mycellium breaking the surface.

Sounds like you've got what you need, and poo is never a casing layer.  People get the words casing and substrate confused alot on here, poo is a substrate component.
