Quick possible contam question.

I have 8 jars of WBS all but one has been fully colonized for 4 days, One of them looks just as great as the others but in a small spot on the bottom corner its uncolonised. It doesn't look bad just uncolonised. I'm going to spawn to substrate tonight, Should I use this jar or do you think it would be risking anything?

You could use the jar (carefully) .... or you could wait for full colonization if the work schedule works out for you.

Sometimes it takes longer for that last little bit to colonize .... sometimes it seems like it never does finish.

Sometimes you can have a bacterial infection going that stalls the jar ... and keeps that last bit from finishing.

Give that jar a smell. If it smells good, go ahead and use it.  I scoop my WBS out of the jars with a spoon.  You might consider not using the uncolonized WBS as spawn ... just the colonized stuff.

Yeah, smelling is a good idea. I've seen stalling. didn't smell like mushrooms. Although it wasn't on WBS

but remember! waft with your hand. Don't sniff it directly it's just not good for ya

I recently had a bag "stall out" I guess you could call it. There were areas of uncolonized rye grain (never happens like this) for over a week with no progress. I decided to shake it up once more for the hell of it, 48 hours later the whole bag was a solid brick of mycelium infested rye grain. I used it for spawn and all went well. It was very interesting though.
