Quick Straw Question for the Xperts out there

I'm sure its been asked before, but I can't find it in a quick search of posts or the FAQ: Why is straw (dung/compost as well for that matter) pasteurized instead of sterilized? Just a curiosity question from reading other posts regarding straw teks.

It kills all the bacteria, but some of the bacteria that is put to death if helpfull in warding off other harmfull bacteria.

I have sterilized poo before and saw no difference but I tried sterilizing straw and it contamed very bad and smelled horrible after like 5 days.
