Even after all this time, I'm still not sure about what to make of this thread... I'm leaning dangerously close to fail, though.

You can  :facepalm: if you want. I think that something will become of this.  At most I put up 3-4" of a top to gamble. That is nothing to me. So far if I were to remove it I could make 3-4 cuttings out of one top. How is that losing? I have dozens of tops from many species lined up on my window sill & they are just in waiting.

I could see the :facepalm: if it was my only cactus.

So one side continued growing, and the other pupped? I've got to say, that ended up nicely. I'm still a naysayer, but I've got to admit, I didn't think both ends would continue to grow.

I may have made a mistake doing two cuts to one side.  I probably should have cut the top off of the terminal side and left the pup side alone.  I didn't make a deep cut like I did the first time. Only time will tell.  I put a cup on top of it when I'm not here , so rain doesn't infect the cut.  there is a daily deluge of rain here.

your pups will be thinner than how the cactus would have grown if you let it be.
  Now with the 2 thin sections growing pups you would have even been better off chopping the whole top off. That way where the pups come from the section would be thick.

  I have a big pedro I cut a pup off but not the whole thing. That pup sent another pup but an even skinnier one :crazy2:

This whole project is just to make something interesting.  I'm not losing anything , but it seems that I'm gaining information.  It might take a year or two to get what I am seeking.  Anyone who grows cacti know , there are no immediate results.

Who knows , maybe some of the pups may turn Monstrose.

All this experimentation doesn't seem to do well to the plant itself, I dunno what you seek and if these speculated results may be shown but it comes in the price of the plants struggling and losing strength.
