I'm going with Metal Halide lighting. It's higher in the blue spectum and will give better growth. I use ones that are around 4.2K.

For my small pachanois I go with daylight flouros. These are around 6.5K in the spectrum.

You might want to read up on the spectum differences and what type of growth they produce.

the setup i use is 4 compact flourescents.  2 30w and 2 14w right now, probably going to upgrade to 4 30w.  later on down the road i'm going to get a 1k MH

Im using cool floros overballasted. It increases the intensity which helps with tall growth.

how expensive do you think a fully sufficient MH lighting system would be to grow my pedros?

what components would you recommend?

i've seen 1k mh ballasts + lights for < 250 on the web. you can build your own reflector and hanging apparatus.

say Grower, is this system ready to use, as is? or would you have to buy any aditional pieces? i've been looking for a good deal on a grow light for quite some time now and have never come across something so cheap. i've seen lights of that sort going for around $200+

Those are very nice prices @insidesun... I noticed they only ship to Canada and USA, does anyone know of any established european vendors with decent prices for MH & CFL?

What kind of spike will a MH like that cause in your power bill? What would you need to grow 4 cacti?

You could use a 150w MH to grow only 4 cacti and a few more. A 400w can suport a good 10-30 pedros for about $15-25 a month and a 1k runs about $40-50 and should suport 2-3x as much.

Is that going to cause a large enough power spike to raise any eyebrows?

absolutely not. power companies don't have the time for that sort of thing.

while i don't think they really monitor that at all or anymore, i did see an episode of cops where they said they got tipped off by the power company for a possible grow op and sent undercovers to buy weed or something and got a warrant to confiscate the shit. When they got in they had like 1 light and 3 plants or so under it. This was also in 1989 or so,  perhaps times changed, or it was just bullshit and always has been.

It takes a basemet full of lights to arise any susspicion. I would say anything around 2-3K is un noticible with all the a/c's, ovens, microwaves, washers. Around 5k it gets sketchy. In an apartment i would stick with a 4-600w in a closet out of sight.
