Some ideas, please read
    #1085564 - 11/25/02 08:32 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

While sterilizing the jars (finally with a pc) today, then several ideas came up. Anyone tell me if this will work please. Here it is..

We put adjusted amount of BRF formula into the casing tray, fill it up 3/4 full, cover the top 1/4 with dry verm, seal the lid with 4 holes poked and sterilize. Then innoculate right into the casing tray, throw in the incubator.

When the substrate's colonized, get rid of the dry verm. Apply casing layer, and start usual casing procedure with the original tray.

So instead of crumbling the cake, we just leave it in one-piece. One less chance of contamination (crumble), and cheaper (just buy trays).

What do you think?

Just thought of it, this might increase the colonizing speed, since the substrate's spread thinner in the tray.. Assuming you don't use a huge casing tray.

Hmm, I don't understand. Shouldn't you just incolulate the jars with spores, colonize like normal, and then case? Your idea doesn't really seem new.

No, that much substrate will take forever to colonize. It won't finish by the time contams set in.

How are you gonna sterilize it in the casing tray. If you sterilize it in jars and then transfer to the casing container, you will undoubtedly get contams, unless you want to buy an expensive flow hood and/or glove box.

I think he means packing the substrate into a container and sterilising it.
Innoculating it and letting the container colonise.
This has been done before and it will work.
But you do need to do this on a small scale if you are a new grower otherwise contamination will set in.
Jars generally are the way to go.

^^Yeah, that's what i meant. Pack the substrate in the tray and sterilize it that way. And innoculate right in the casing tray.

around the amount of 1 pint of substrate is what I'm thinking

It has been done before and works?

Yes, but it doesn't make sense to do cause it takes a while to colonize, and you have a great risk of contamination.

How you gonna sterilize?

Haven't thought of that yet.... would boiling water work?

Maybe I should just scratch the idea...

I don't think the casing containers would hold up too well.

There are better things you could be thinking about, but it was a good thought.
