I'm far less concerned about what it'll do to Medical Marijuana then what it'll do to the health care system as a whole.

Not sure, I know it's controlled real tightly though and the marijuana is of poor quality and usually quite old before it reaches anyone.

How many times does this have to be repeated before it sinks in?

IF YOU LIKE YOUR HEALTH INSURANCE, YOU CAN KEEP IT!

No one is going to replace your health insurance with a public plan.  That's why they call it a public OPTION.  And in any case, how many health insurance plans actually cover medical marijuana?  I assume most people just pay for it directly.  Considering the health care plan is only about coverage, and will not nationalize the health care system as a whole, your point is completely moot.

no public health care would be (and is) much worse than private

my point is that if the government can offer cheaper prices b/c they can just run up their debt without answering to anyone....how will the private companies be able to compete?

won't they just go out of business...overnight?
then no one will have a choice and so the system will functionally be public

the idea that "everyone can keep their current plan" is a facade, when the government becomes an insurance company, it functionally runs all other insurance companies out of business by monopoly!

At the risk of further derailing the thread, I'll attempt to answer your objections.

Tell that to the members of Congress who get it, or all the military veterans who use the VA, or the elderly people who jealously guard their Medicare.  If in fact private care was better, it could out-compete public care, even with deficit spending.

Believe it or not, the bill does take funding into consideration, so it's just going to run up the debt.  In fact, in the long term, it will lower it.  I've got news for you:  Our current health care system costs the government more money than what countries with single-payer pay, in terms of percent of their budget.  So the public option would actually lower our long-term debt.

No, not if they're any good at what they do.  It's common for health insurance companies to pay exorbitant salaries to their CEO's while denying care to people with pre-existing conditions and surprising those who do have coverage with loopholes by which they refuse to pay.  These companies aren't struggling to get by.  They're making huge profits while America suffers.  A public option would just help keep them honest.

Did you know that private insurance companies continue to function just fine in France?
