Best way to strike up a conversation with someone?

I was inspired by another thread in SA.

How do you go about striking up a conversation with someone / that pretty girl you've seen, without:

A) Sounding like a dick

B) Looking like a dick.

I'm talking 20+ year olds.

I don't know really...just generally, yeah like when you see someone in the coffee shop or  cafe  - 'normal stuff' if you get me.

Ano 3, I like the cheeky idea - wouldn't make me sound like a hideously lecherous bastard.

Guess i'm more afraid of rejection than the process of actually speaking to someone.

Oh. Go get rejected a few times, get over it.
Just walk up to somebody and start talking. Since you have no goal, there's no fear. "Oh, I saw you got the waffle fries- I always eat too much ketchup with those".

Get a job where you face the public, little minimum wage thing. Clerk at a convenience store or something. It'll give you practice at taking, and people to talk to.

Pay them a random, flippant compliment. If they are wearing something you think is cool just say, Thats a nice teeshirt or whatever. you get special bonus points for noticing details liek if she recently got her hair or nails done.

i've often thought of quitting my current job to get a job behind a bar or something similar, i think i'd thrive but not sure my wallet could handle the drop in pay.

Yeah I don't see the people round my way being so amiable to random conversation. I appreciate your point and perspective though.

People everywhere enjoy conversation, it's a very natural and human thing. Go do it, you'll see. You get better at it with practice.

More rejection practice: Spot super hot girl, way out of your league.
Give her obvious look, then tell her "Thanks, you just made my day" or similar, and keep on walking. Look back with a big smirk on your face. Keep walking. Don't stop, look like you want to stop, or anything.

Haha I'm older than that. 25!  And, as much as I'd like to kid myself that all I'm after is sex, I think I'm starting to feel like I'd actually like to meet someone for more than sex.

I like quirky girls more than high brow types (tho hayden is a total babe!)

Go volunteer at a hospital or museum or something. :yesnod: Lots and lots of exposure, but all very structured so you can say what you need to and not sound like a goof. At the same time, you are exposed to plenty of people so you'll opportunities to say more.
