Help with .MKV files
    #10744390 -

My movies are in mkv format. I understand that mkv files contain the movie and subtitles. Is there a way I can remove the subtitles from my movies? It seems silly to have Spanish subtitles for pineapple express. Especially when I don't speak it. Plus when I bump the caption button on my remote I hate when the subtitles pop up. Subtitles for crouching tiger on the other hand... necessary.

EDIT:

Found this great program!

What movie player are you using? You should be able to find the subtitle options in the player.

For example, in VLC, it's in Video > Subtitles Track

Im using XBMC. Some movies the subtitles are off. Some its on and I have to turn it off. For kill bill vol 1, the subtitles are off but when they start to speak jap i need to turn them on. which is a PITA. cant I edit the subtitle file to be on but delete all the text before and after the jap?

BTW: Kill Bill is only 4.45 GB. Its suppose to be HD 720p. Is there a way I can find out? Seems too small for 720p.

4.4 gb is average for a 720p .mkv file encoding using h264, at least all mine end up right around there...

And for removing the subtitles, you can do it, just rip the audio and video streams out of the mkv, and remux them back into an mkv without the subtitles...

peace

As HeavyToilet said VLC is the easiest way to manage videos IME.  In 2 clicks you can watch without subs.  I like VLC because I've never run into a format I couldn't play.  VLC + K-Lite Mega Codec pack is all you really need.

The problem is when I load the movie into VLC, the subtitles are playing already. What program should I use?

Found that great program. Now all I need is to figure out how to get subtitles only for a certain point in a movie. Kill Bill is all english but the one guy speaks Japanese for a minute every now and then. It would be great if the subtitles popes up only then.

The only one that had multiple subtitles was ben button. All the others only had one in some crazy language. If I take the subs out of Kill Bill then when the Japanese guy speaks I cannot turn them on. Alternately if I do not turn them off I see the whole movie in English text.

I prefer K-Lite Codec/Windows Media Player Classic.  It handles sending audiostream out to SPDIF to my receiver for digital surround sound.  VLC just wasn't as successful with it.

Extract the subtitles as a .sbt file and edit it with notepad. Remove the bits you don't want and save it. Either package it back in, or leave it as an .sbt in the same folder as the mkv - some video players will load it and display the subtitles. Though they might not do that if the mkv already has subtitles.

No wonder you don't know how to do anything. You haven't bothered to learn.

I was just kidding shit.

Ive been working with computers since I was in 4th grade

anyhow.. Ive given up on mkv files. I delete all my HD movies and now I use standard def. I have a 1TB Raid set up but it was filling fast. I figure 150 HD movies was no comparison to 1000+ standard def movies.
