"hot hew downloads" does not matter. the mpaa can seed a torrent forever, or limewire, or kazza. your best bet is to actually get on it before them, from a private site. they also don't just jump on one release, they jump on all of them. stay off of public sites (the bay). use peer guardian w/ all 20 list updated.

You saying that the new Harry Potter movie is just as dangerous to DL as some old western like A Fistful Of Dollars? I dont think so.

I have encountered a dozen or so of these letters from friends and myself, every single one was from a recent movie, video game, etc. My opinion: corporations arnt watching torrents like the original Outer Limits, or the Mamas and the Papas nearly as much as new albums and new shows. The new stuff is where the money is, and is where their money is being lost.

i'm saying who wants to d/l a freaking western. the whole reason people pirate is to get what they want. if u want to get what u want, stick to private sites, use pg2 w/ all 20 list updated, and only keep a modest ratio. i belong to a huge list of private trackers and know people from all the major trackers and we don't seem to get these letters almost ever so i'd have to imagine we have a winning formula for now.

I'd say the easiest way to stay under the radar is to stay AWAY from Torrents, and P2P Networks.

ISP's can track the packets that come through thier gateway, as they are unique.

If you download from sites like say, ones that offer "Direct Downloads", it will only show up on the ISP's end as a TCP/IP packet (a common internet protocol packet, exactly the same as what loads your web-browser).

It's worked for me for years.

The WORST that I have ever gotten was a "mandatory upgrade" from my ISP because i was using too much bandwidth in a month (739gigs to be exact...LMAO) so now i pay $20 a month more and i got off the hook.

I like how the MPAA's letters state that you can go to jail for downloading a single movie, when you clearly can't. With all the lawyers over there they should be able to fix that email up

That letter seems written by a jackass anyways.

What is this: a hacker could look at all your files and lead to identity theft bullshit?

Oops, forgot to unshare my "this is my bank account and credit card and social security and ID and all my fucking passwords.txt" file

also, yeah, that letter is bullshit.  I looked up roadrunners privacy policy, and they cannot give out any of my personal information without a warrant or direct police/LE action.  So if you ever get one DO NOT CALL OR REPLY, or you are more or less turning yourself in.

newsgroups all the way. anonymous, fast, most current, etc. plus there is NO UPLOADING INVOLVED. Take a moment to think about what that means. It means you are not leaving a trace of your actions behind, and you are not making yourself vulnerable, like when you upload something (as is the nature of torrents / limewire / dc++ / and all other p2p methods).

The only downside is that newsgroup subscriptions cost money. I love usenetserver.com (unlimited plan = $40 for 3 months) and giganews.com (expensive, but 2x the retention).

for more info on newsgroups, check out this guide, it's the best you will find:

thats what is funny about TW, they may forward the letter from the MIAA or whatever, but give me free news servers, i think giganews actually...lol.

4 connections and 75 day retention...i can't complain...lets me download anywhere from 300-800KB/s...so its good.

i wouldnt use the ISP's newsgroup access. I doubt they are giving you a giganews account. They are giving you a TW usenet account, which is NOT anonymous. Although, I don't think TW is the one policing, it was probably someone with the MPAA/RIAA that found you on bitTorrent and reported you to TW.

Still, I would suggest going with a third party for newsgroup access.

After reading all this tread, i was curious why the option hadn't come up with other ways of downloading files.
Some sites use 3rd party hosts that hold the content, and when you download the file, it just looks like a string of numbers (ie. adrive.com/2399e880923de909e2d320) and then the watchdogs don't know what your downloading except that it is a large file. If for some reason they ever catch on, all that would happen is the file host is contacted and asked to remove the file...then the link goes dead.
And most of the people that are within the movie share networks out there don't label thier movies that they share with anything that could identify it as a movie at all.
As for the ISP's. I'm not sure how it works anywhere else, but in Canada they don't give your info to anyone. The only complaints that i have EVER heard from anywhere (after over 10 years of downloading movies) is 2 warnings for going over my bandwidth usage for the month first warning -(i was 329gigs over)
second warning -( i was 758gigs over) which they gave me the option of cutting me off, or a manditory upgrade to the next bandwidth package (for a meer $20/month extra).

There is no way that the MPAA could download and check every file out there that they suspect is a movie file, so that is how i've gotten away with it for years.
This works so well that i made a site that links to this sort of content (plus linking to content isn't illegal as long as i don't charge money for memberships, but donations for site maintenance is allowed)

I'd suggest looking for other ways than the torrents and P2P's....way too risky.

Plus there is always the option of going to sites that stream DivX movies. Then you just configure your player to download the file while it streams...then you have a copy and it looks like you just watched it online vice downloading it (it ends up showing up as a " .part " file, but any DivX or Media player will play the file with the basic DivX codec pack)

> and then the watchdogs don't know what your downloading except that it is a large file

If you really think that the 'watchdogs' catch you by looking at the filename of the item that you are downloading, then you are in for a very rude awakening... they are collecting evidence that must withstand the rules of evidence in a court of law.  They aren't playing around, and closing your eyes hoping that they won't see you isn't going to help.

> If for some reason they ever catch on, all that would happen is the file host is contacted and asked to remove the file...then the link goes dead.

Assuming the recording industy isn't the one that owns the host in the first place.  You are blindly trusting the host, something which you do not control, for your safety and security.  Not the best practice...

> There is no way that the MPAA could download and check every file out there that they suspect is a movie file, so that is how i've gotten away with it for years.

No way, huh?  Again, you are playing with other peoples freedom based upon your own assumptions.  Not very ethical.  There are companies that exist to do nothing but search and destroy copyrighted material being pirated on the internet.  Companies, plural.  This is a huge market.  They mostly concentrate on new releases, but that doesn't mean they don't watch for old stuff as well.

You've gotten away from it for years because you are in Canada and you are lucky.

> Plus there is always the option of going to sites that stream DivX movies.

Again, you have to trust that the site is legit and not a honeypot owned by the recording industry.  (Something which they have been caught doing in the past in the form of a torrent tracker.)

> it ends up showing up as a " .part " file

That is because of the client software you are using... could easily be different for people using alternate software.

All of that, and you didn't mention NNTP?

(Sorry if the above sounds terse.  I don't like to see misleading statements or assumptions when it comes to peoples freedom.)

where is utorrent banned?  it is the #1 most recommended client by every major tracker that counts for anything.

you're half right, but all the nerds that use utorrent haven't been able to find not one stitch of legitimate evidence that utorrent does anything it isn't supposed to be doing makes me think it is safe.  to be more accurate, bittorrent was given to the mpaa, then utorrent was bought out by bittorrent, so it's more like the company that owns  utorrent is owned by the anti p2p company.
