hydroponics outside

so we have some strawberries with lots of shoots coming out I'm thinking about taking cuttings. They are some type that fruits until it dies, not just once.

It's sitting collecting dust and I want more strawberries. I was thinking of running it outside by out pond(I'll take a pic in a bit it looks nice) where it would get plenty of sun. I'm figuring I'll have to cover it with a plastic sheet and just cut slits so the plants can come through. My only worry about using this outside is the rain over filling it and diluting my nutrients, I'm figuring the plastic should help keep out excess water from rain.

I hope it will work well, It'd be real nice to bring a piece of the garden in for winter, the garden is a family project, I'm hoping to get the family more interested into indoor gardening, we have most a basement free, 5 gallon hydro buckets are easy to make and maintain.

Our house would make for a great place for indoor gardening, not only do we have a regular generator for power outages we have one of those nice systems that run off the gas for the house and start on their own when the power goes out.

At a friends house they have tomatoes growing from  hanging 5 gallon buckets, they grow out the top and grow out the bottom, I thought that was neat and we'll probably try it for next years garden. I love picking fresh food for dinner, nothing better than your own home grown vegies berries and such.

Anyone ever try growing hydroponic carrots? I'm wondering how stuff like tubers and the like grow in a hydroponic setup
