Photography- Cameras.

I'm thining of getting into photography. I have a portable harddrive that holds 1000 gigs, so I figured if i got a good camera and lens, after that it's like a free hobby.

So if one didn't mind spending the coin on something half decent, what should I be looking at for cameras?

As a commercial photographer I will try to help you the best I can. What's your price range? I am going to be honest and say photography is not cheap but it is A LOT of fun in my opinion. Personally I like Nikon but if you are interested in Canon I can also provide some insight for their cameras as well. As soon as you let me know your price range I can help you with specific cameras, pros/cons and their specs as well. Also when I say price range I mean the price you are willing to pay for the camera body with the kit lens, which is the default 18-55mm lens. I recommend getting the camera body with this lens because it will suit your basic needs and help you get adjusted to your camera. I am going out of town tomorrow and will be back Friday to reply to your message.  :sunny:

Remember that it's the photographer that makes the shot, not the camera. The camera is just an in-between and in the best case, it limits your creativity in a minimal way.

So what camera should you choose? Well, I'd say: pick one you think will help you express yourself. I don't care if you pick your camera for its looks, for its brand reputation, its technical specifications or the accessories that are available for it.

Especially if you're about to purchase your fist camera, you'll find that it's difficult to make out what are the important characteristics. Hence the advice above: identify what's important to you at this moment. One year down the road, assuming that you stick with it, you'll have learned what you do and don't like in your current gear and you'll have a wishlist for your next setup. So don't expect to buy the ultimate camera today. Buy one that'll allow you to make those first steps through a potentially life-long learning curve. And in truth, practically every digital camera fits that description. (I exclude analog film cameras, as they slow down the learning process through longer feedback loops and have much higher operating costs. I do use film frequently myself, but it's a nostalgia thing, really.)

@jonas: you got some great images on your web site, I enjoyed quickly scrolling through them; they deserve a closer look than the quick one I've just taken!

Thank you very much koraks! I agree 100% with you that Tasty should look into a camera body that is not too advanced, but still a good DSLR. This is why I was very glad getting the Nikon D40x: not too pricey, but still an amazing body with great potential. Koraks is also right when he says it is you who takes the picture, not the camera. Personally this concept grew on to me and through practice taking pictures and experimenting you will not help but notice you're mind working differently. I would also like to add another thing: do not get hung up about the BEST camera body out there. 80% of the quality of the shot is actually owed to the lens, not the body. In all actuality a higher megapixel does not mean a better quality shot, it just means that your image dimensions will be higher. Now don't get me wrong, this DOES mean that the shot will be a little bit better quality compared to a lower megapixel body but it is a very very slight difference. Once you get the hang of using the basic kit lens and your DSLR, then I would recommend looking for new lenses that meet your needs.

Sweet. I'm not really sure what I'm looking for as far as expressing myself. Price range, I could spend as much as probably $2000 for a camera , not that I need to spend that much mind you, but I could. I've heard Nikon and Canon are good, but I wouldn't know where to begin or how to compare them.

The D300 is a great camera and will allow you to shoot from 6-8 frames per second max. If you are looking to shoot sports, insects, skateboarders or anything else that moves fast then this is a good camera for you. The D300 also shoots very well in dark environments at a high ISO without very noticeable noise in the image. This is something that is very valuable when shooting in a dark environment where light isn't available. The D90 however has the same megapixels as the D300 and is one of Nikon's first DSLR's where you can shoot HD video with it. If this is a feature you would like to have then this camera is a smart choice. Both will be able to support autofocus with many lenses as well, making both choices good. It really depends on what you plan on shooting. Remember also, that $400-$500 you save could also get you a pretty good piece of glass as well. I'm talking to people and so I'm hearing Canon as well. Do you have much experience in with Canon? Why go with Nikon over them? They seem like pretty much the same but at the same time not at all.

The D300 has a faster auto-focus speed I think.

The girl I'm talking to is a photo major and is looking into trading out her Sony D100 for the Nikon D300.

I tend to like the color balance on the cannons slightly better, but that can always be changed after shooting, especially if you shoot in RAW

I'm not completely sure about interchanging Nikon and Canon lenses and personally I do not have much experience with Canon DSLRs. Either way however both companies produce similar lenses so you will not really have to worry about a certain lens not being able to work with your camera. Other companies like Sigma also produce good lenses that will be compatible with either company you choose as well.

ah, wanted the D300 but it's a bit too much for what i have at the moment so I got a D90. It'll be fine, can get some lenses, and then if i need to upgrade my body later, i will. In the meantime i get to take pictures.

There are adapters available that allow you to use Nikkor/Nikon mount lenses on Canon bodies. However, this results in a loss of autofocus and aperture control. This essentially means that it's an 'all manual' solution: using post-2000 equipment for a 1950s way of working. If you're now buying into your first system, there's no reason whatsoever to contemplate this option. Just buy into a system and use the lenses designed for that particular mount.

As Jonas points out, both Canon and Nikon offer comprehensive ranges of lenses, both in the consumer and the professional segments (there's no real distinction technically, apart from price. There are pros that use 'consumer' equipment and the other way around is even more common these days). The other manufacturers (e.g. Sony with its Minolta mount and the (micro)four-thirds system) tend to have somewhat narrower product ranges, that will however cover the needs of any amateur photographer. The major drawback in my opinion is that the relative lack of used equipment on offer means that you'll have to buy everything new. Personally, I purchase most of my equipment used these days. Especially with Canon, that's a walk in the park; supply of second hand Canon equipment is huge, so you can get hold of anything you want within a reasonable timeframe and for a reasonable price. This is also true, but to a slightly lesser extent, for Nikon.

Ultimately, the choice between Canon and Nikon can be made by going to a store that sells both and just see what each feels like. Some people have a distinct preference for either user interface and indeed, they are different, although image quality and functionality are matched within the same price range.

However, if you're unsure if you'd be willing to pay the premium for a D300 over a D90, then I'd suggest that you cultivate some experience with (digital) photography first before you make huge investments. Start out with a low-end dSLR and kit lens; the D40 Jonas uses is a great piece of equipment, and so are Canon's bodies in the same price range. Just start photographing and see where you reach the limits of your equipment. In the first few months or even years, you're much more likely to run into the limits of your capabilities than that of your equipment. Mind you, world-famous photographers like Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa shot their famous work with tiny all-manual Leica cameras. Functionality: 0. Experience: 100.

Nevertheless, you'll learn soon enough what's important to you in terms of equipment. Once you feel you've reached that point, start investing in good glass (again, Jonas is right: it's the lens that determines the image quality) and perhaps purchase another body that offers the features you like. Keep in mind that a digital SLR body will typically last you 3 years max (in terms of features, economic viability and technical durability), while good quality lenses may last you up to 3 decades. dSLR bodies are arguably subject to Moore's law, while lenses still follow the same laws of analog photography that they've done for decades.
