Finally getting a good camera

So I'm going to be getting a good camera for my graduation present, and I'm seeking suggestions.

I've looked at a few Sony digitals and that's probably the route I'm going to take if no one says otherwise.


I need something with a great macro, because thats usually what kind of shots I'm taking, although something with a good sports mode would be nice too.

I have $500 to work with

I looked and most DSLR's start at about 500, so that doesnt really leave me options for an sd card.

I guess im thinking more of a good point and shoot :-\

I'd recommend the Canon Powershot G9 if you can find a used one, otherwise it's too expensive. Like most Canon point and shoots CHDK is available for it, which is a custom firmware program people have created that gives you all kinds of new tools and features in the camera.

The other Powershot series cameras are good too, I've got no complaints about my AS570, though obviously the performance you get from a $200 camera like that won't match a G series. I've even been able to take some nice pictures of lightning with it thanks to a motion detection script in CHDK.

Added an example of a macro shot on the AS570. Like most point and shoots it doesn't have very good depth of field when you get in close, so a lot of the time you'll end up with only half your subject in focus.
