Broken Gauge on PC... can I plug the hole?

I've got a 17qt presto PC and the gauge is old, rusted, gets condensation when cooking, and doesn't work. Period. I was wondering, if until I can get a new gauge can I just seal of the gauge hole?

I'm assuming I can, because the PC still has the rocker/regulator intact, which is weighted to 15 PSI. Many pressure cookers have ONLY the rocker and not the gauge, so I'm guessing I could do this and still maintain the correct pressure; obviously given that the hole for the gauge is sealed safely with a valve/bolts which can withstand pressure.

Whatcha think?

yep, did it before myself. dropped a 23 quart presto off the table and broke the gauge off. plugged it up and worked like a champ.

Frickin' right. Thanks for the confirmations. Now I just need to get my sealing gasket working and I'll be all set.

What is the problem? I had my presto start to leak between the lid and pot when it got up to about 5 psi. Turned out the locking tabs on the lid were just stretching out.

I marked the area on the lid where it was leaking then heated the locking tabs with a small torch and gently hammered them down until the lid fit the pot tightly.

This will work on a steel PC but never heat aluminum with a torch EVER it destroys the molecular bond and weaks the aluminum to the point of failure.

Agreed. 

Of course, if they'd quit buying made in china crap they wouldn't have this problem to begin with.  I'd like to see the tabs on an All American PC ever bend. It would take a medium-sized nuclear device to do so.

Well thanks guys!

I finally got 'er pressured up and got the rocker working!

It appears the sealing ring only leaks when it's beginning to pressurize, but once it get's high enough (the pressure) it seals itself. Probably will need a new one eventually, but I did get it pressured up.

To plug the gauge hole I just used a bolt with some metal and rubber washers. It does seem to leak a tiny bit, right around the nut at the top... getting up through the hole in the washer, but not enough to stop it from pressurizing.

Eventually I'm going to do a setup like RR did in this thread: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10509595#10509595

^ using a cheap air pressure gauge and some hose. I found the gauge for only $4, just need to find the hose! Does anyone know of any other sort of hose that is easily available that will withstand pressure and heat up to 15 psi?


As for cheap chinese made shit... I didn't buy this PC, nor would I have, at least not at the retail price. I got it free on a job in a foreclosed home. I assumed it would have it's issues, and it did... a missing rocker being one of them. Buut, that's all over now. It's perfectly suitable for my needs at the moment. Once sufficient funding is available, I'm sure I'll upgrade to a beastly 'ol AA.
