Spanking = abuse

This is in response to a discussion in another thread.

Spanking is no more abusive than withholding food or destroying a child's toy (tyler_0_durden's alternatives to spanking) .
Any form of discipline can be abusive if it isn't done properly.

Everyone my age and older was spanked as a child.
Spare the rod, spoil the child was the motto of the day.
We didn't grow up to be homicidal maniacs that have no respect.

Spanking is most effective in children under the age of 5.
These children can't be reasoned with and need a direct cause and effect punishment to get their attention.
Spanking fits this need very well.

Spanking after the age of 10ish is wrong IMO.
There are more effective ways to discipline kids after 10.

seriously though after ten, taking a kids playstation away for the week is far more devastating to a kid than getting a spanking.

I was never hit as a kid. My parents both worked for child protective. However I don't see anything wrong with it (non-abusive hitting that is) and I don't think they really did either. I'm not sure. Maybe they would look down on it.

My dad told me fucked up ways to abuse kids and get away with it though. Pretty much if it doesn't leave a mark then you're good to go.
Phonebooks work, as does filling a kiddy pool with uncooked rice and making your kid kneel in it.

I always got paddled at school.  Coaches, principles, etc...  Then I got it again when I got home.

I was spanked with metal studded belts, wooden spoons, hangers, flyswatters, switches, and just about anything within arms reach.  Abuse?  Nah.

Uncooked rice just sounds very uncomfortable.

I was spanked when I was younger. I would much rather have taken a swift hit in the ass than taking my video games away =D.

Hot wheels track was painful xD, that only happened once, then my father couldn't stand to do it anymore. I think my parents disliked spanking me or my sister more than we did...

And, Hangers O.o... Atleast my parents couldn't even stand to use their own hands...

I fucking hurts. At least as a little kid. It's usually a pretty long time that people make their kids kneel in it.
Some people used uncooked corn kernels instead of rice.

quite simply, there is as much of a line between abusive spanking, and responsible spanking,

as there is between abusive criticism, and responsible(constructive) criticism

you can exchange that word for "talking, drinking (i only drink in very rare social situations, and only a little at that), videogaming, smoking pot, EATING, and so on

I got it in school until my sophomore year, they got some new
guy to wield the paddle, a geeky fucker, anyway I was informed
I'd get 5 licks and I informed him that for each one I got I'd
give him 5, he didnt believe me until he had me bent over the
chair, I had one fist loaded and ready for when he made contact.
he'd already suspended me twice for fighting and knew I wasnt
afraid of the big guys

he changed his mind about the paddle, we decided he should
suspend me, he called my mom and she wasnt having anything to do
with that shit so she recommended I do some sort of labor after
school so I got 5 days of that, apparently my free labor was
better than a lot of the paid labor so they gave me a job at
$12/hr, they delivered my checks at lunch time and everyone
asked what the check was for, I told them they were paying me to
show up for school every day
