Quick question for anyone that would have had experience with this...

I have a 2 jars colonizing, they are at about 50% today and they have been incubating for 4 days now. 1.5 pint jars using rye grain.

My question is, I am worried about contaminates, is it possible to do a grain to grain transfer of the mycelium even if the jar isnt fully colonized?

I have sterilized a few half pint jars and I would like to inoculate them with mycelium from one of the other 2 jars while nothing is contaminated. If done in sterile room, does anyone know if this is possible.

Thanks in advance for any advice you guys might have to offer.

if your questionable spawn IS indeed contaminated, you would just spread this to the new jars without being aware.
Best bet is to let them go, see what they do. They may be just fine.

if I chose to go ahead and do it just to have a buckup would the new jar still take even if the original one is only 50% colonized.

I was thinking that perhaps if i take healthy mycelium in a properly sterilize jar it would continue to grow healthy in the new jar. what do you think?

It should work using truly sterile technique.

But it is bad practice to transfer uncolonized grain during g2g transfers!  You will most likely end up with contamination...
