Re: Extreme Skepticism - one interpretation [Re: Lakefingers]
    #10608583 -

There are many things in life that I am unsure about but there are a few things in life that I am sure about.

I know without a doubt that I am in love with my wife.

I know without a doubt that open and honest communication with my wife makes life easier.

I know without a doubt that befriending someone who I can not trust is a mistake.

I know without a doubt that 1+1=2

I know without a doubt that if I do not somehow provide food for myself I will die. Same goes for water.

I know without a doubt that living a good honest life allows me to be confident about who I am.

I know without a doubt that when I was younger and lacked integrity my mind was not as clear or confident as it is now.

I know without a doubt that some people who read that I consider myself a confident person figure that means that I think I know everything even though I'm smarter than that.

I know without a doubt that I do not have the capacity to know everything and that many things in life are better left a mystery.

I know without a doubt that my wife loves me.

I know without a doubt that meditation is good for us.

I know without a doubt that psychedelic drugs can be used with great benefit.

There is probably more but you get the idea.

are you serious? this just sounds like things that you are highly convicted towards. 1+1 = 2 because thats what 2 is. it is '1+1'. a priori.

as for knowing things like meditation is good for you or that your wife loves you.. look at what you are saying. you are just claiming things. what is meditation? what is love? you cant pinpoint them and so there will always be the doubt that you perhaps are making internal mistakes of judgement. If you simply have no doubt that you could be wrong.. well thats just called being cocky/arrogant. which is fine. but it doesnt bring certainty of knowledge in a sense that other people could accept

You might believe without a doubt that these are true, but I'm afraid you don't know them.

This is quite a revealing statement.

I had a feeling it had something to do with fear.

Then why did you say that I'm in denial if earlier I also said that he's not afraid?

So many assumptions and so little skepticism in this thread...

We only can know things 'relatively', not 'absolutely'.
Grasping for the 'absolute' is like grasping into thin air. We simply have no point of reference, in other words, we have to put the point of reference in relative position to ourselves, making it relative and absolute in its reference in the same time.
Our 'relative' condition in existence makes some (relative) 'absolutes' a necessity.
