illegal to grow potatoes in the ground in California??

I was told by a good friend that in California you can't grow potatoes in the ground because they are so incredibly invasive and you can only grow them in raised beds or containers.  I have a hard time believing this. Can anyone support this?

I wouldnt imagine potatoes to be very invasive, they dont
grow well unless you've tilled deeply, used a subsoiler or
use raised beds... raised beds make harvesting and cultivation
easier, if they were a really invasive species they wouldnt be
permitted for cultivation in the state

Yeah, I wouldn't be so sure....
Assuming there's not some crazy law. It's California.

I'd grow potatoes, and not give a fuck...
But some on the other-hand might want to check up on it.

Let me see...In one city it's a misdemeanor to spit on the side walk. In one city it's illegal to smoke a cigarette in public. Possessing  Cubensis spores(Unless collected directly from a live growing mushroom from the wild, in this state)is a felony drug crime. In all state park beaches; burning driftwood can result in a $100,000 fine. Also in some counties honking near farm animals can result in a fine & arrest. Sometimes standing within a block of a business without purchasing an item from said business within a 10 min time frame can result in a loitering arrest. It goes on and on.

California has got the most ridiculous laws I've every seen. I wouldn't completely believe everything I've heard, but I would investigate any law I was in fear of violating.

Purple potatoes are from Peru. My guess is potatoes would grow well in California, it being similar to Peru weather wise.
