Let It Grow 1

Morning comes, she follows the path to the river shore, Lightly sung, her song is the latch on the morning's door. See the sun sparkle in the reeds, silver beads, pass into the sea.
She comes from a town where they call her the woodcutter's daughter, She's brown as the bank where she kneels down to gather her water, and She bears it away with a love that the river has taught her.
Let it flow, greatly grow, wide and clear.
Round and round, the cut of the plow in the furrowed field, Seasons round, the bushels of corn and the barley meal, Broken ground, open and beckoning to the spring, Black dirt live again! The plowman is broad as the back of the land he is sowing, As he dances the circular track of the plow ever knowing That the work of his day measures more than the planting and growing
Let it grow, Let it grow, Greatly yield.
What shall we say, shall we call it by a name, As well to count the angels dancing on a pin. Water bright as the sky from which it came, And the name is on the earth that takes it in. We will not speak but stand inside the rain, And listen to the thunder shouting "I am! "
Nothin' more, the love of the women, work of men. Seasons round, creatures great and small, up and down as we rise and fall.

Treetop Flyer
By Stephen Stills
I could be a rambler from the Seven Dials
I don't pay taxes 'cause I never file
I don't do bid'ness that don't make me smile
I love my aeroplane 'cause she's got style
I'm a treetop flyer
Treetop flyer
I fly any cargo that you can pay to run
The bush league pilots, they just can't get the job done
You've got to fly down the canyon, don't never see the sun
There's no such thing as an easy run
I'm a treetop flyer
Treetop flyer
I fly low, I'm in high demand
Go 15 feet over the Rio Grande
I blow the mesquite right up off the sand
I'm seldon seen, 'specially when I land
I'm a treetop flyer
Born survivor
Now people been askin' me where'd you learn to fly that way
Was over in Vietnam, chasin' the NVA
The government taught me, and they taught me right
Stay down below the treeline and you'll be alright
I'm a treetop flyer
Born survivor
So I'm comin' home, I'm runnin' low and fast
Promised my woman this is gonna be my last
I get the ship down, I tie her fast
And then some old boy wakes up, and he says, "Hey son,
wanna make some fast cash?"
I'm a treetop flyer
Well there's things I am
And there's things I am not
Yes I'm a smuggler and I could get shot
I ain't gonna die, I ain't going to get caught
You see I'm a flying fool, and this aeroplane is, whoo, hot
I'm a treetop flyer
Born survivor
Workin' alone

Sara
I laid on a dune, and I looked at the sky, When the children were babies and played on the beach. You came up behind me, I saw you go by, You were always so close and still within reach.
Sara, Sara, Whatever made you want to change your mind? Sara, Sara, So easy to look at, so hard to define.
I can still see them playin' with their pails in the sand, They run to the water their buckets to fill. I can still see the shells fallin' out of their hands As they follow each other back up the hill.
Sara, Sara, Sweet virgin angel, sweet love of my life. Sara, Sara, Radiant jewel, mystical wife.
Sleepin' in the woods by a fire in the night. Where you fought for my soul and went up against the odds I was too young to know you were doin' it right And you did it with strength that belonged to the gods.
Sara, Sara, Wherever we travel, we're never apart Sara, Sara, Beautiful lady so dear to my heart.
I can still hear the sounds of those Methodist bells, I'd taken the cure and had just gotten through, Stayin' up for days in the Chelsea Hotel, Writin' "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" for you.
Sara, Sara, It's all so clear, I could never forget Sara, oh Sara, Lovin' you is the one thing I'll never regret
Now the beach is deserted except for some kelp And a piece of an old ship that lies on the shore. You always responded when I needed your help, You gave a map and a key to your door.
Sara, oh Sara, Glamorous nymph with an arrow and bow, Sara, oh Sara, Don't ever leave me, don't ever go.

Too Far Gone by Neil Young (Who else?)
When I woke up you were gone And the sun was on the lawn Empty pillow with perfume on I smelled it.
Well, we met in my favorite bar Took a ride in my old car But I still don't know how We made it home.
Was I too far gone Too far gone Too far gone For you.
We had drugs and we had booze But we still had something to lose And by dawn I wanted To marry you.
With our attitudes by day And our secret dreams by night Can we really live our lives That way.
Am I too far gone Too far gone Too far gone For you.
Was I too far gone Too far gone Too far gone For you.

Not to be a hardass or anything Ripple but you omitted the line,
"So it goes, we make what we made since the world began"
Lay off the wine man.
Weather Report Suite
Winter rain, now tell me why, Summers fade, and roses die. The answer came; The wind and rain.
Golden hills, now veiled in grey, Summer leaves have blown away Now what remains? The wind and rain.
And like a desert spring, My lover comes and spreads her wings, Knowing, like a song that's born to soar the sky, Flowing, flowing 'til the waters all are dry, Growing, the loving in her eyes.
Circle songs and sands of time, Seasons will end in tumbled rhyme, And little change, the wind and rain.
And like a desert spring, My lover comes and spreads her wings, Knowing, Like a song that's born to soar the sky, Flowing, Flowing 'til the rivers all are dry, Growing, the loving in her eyes.
Winter gray and falling rain, We'll see summer come again, Darkness falls and seasons change (gonna happen every time). Same old friends the wind and rain, (we'll see summer by and by) Winter gray and falling rain, (summers fade and roses die) We'll see summer come again, Like a song that's born to soar the sky.

live five years if I take my time, ballin' that jack and a drinkin' my wine.
El Paso
Out in the West Texas town of El Paso I fell in love with a Mexican girl. Nighttime would fine me in Rose's Cantina, Music would play and Felina would whirl.
Black as the night were the eyes of Felina, Wicked and evil while casting a spell. My love was strong for this Mexican maiden, I was in love, but in vain I could tell.
One night a wild young cowboy came in, wild as the West Texas wind... Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing, With wicked Felina, the girl that I love.
So in anger I challenged his right for the love of this maiden; Down went his hand for the gun that he wore. My challenge was answered, in less than a heartbeat The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor.
Just for a moment I stood there in silence, Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done. Many thoughts ran through my mind as I stood there; I had but one chance and that was to run.
Out through the back door of Rose's I ran, out where the horses were tied... I picked a good one; he looked like he could run, Up on his back and away I did ride.
Just as fast as I could from the West Texas town of El Paso, Out thru the badlands of New Mexico. Back in El Paso my life would be worthless; Everything's gone in life nothing is left.
But it's been so long since I've seen the young maiden, My love is stronger that my fear of death. I saddled up and away I did go, riding alone in the dark... Maybe tomorrow a bullet may find me, Tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart.
And as last here I am on the hill overlooking El Paso, I can see Rose's Cantina below. My love is strong and it pushes me onward, down off the hill to Felina I go.
Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys, Off to my left ride a dozen or more. shouting and shooting; I can't let them catch me, I've got to make it to Rose's back door.
Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel a deep burning pain in my It's getting harder to stay in the saddle. I'm getting weary, unable to ride.

Walking the valleys and straining through Leaving nothing behind but ignorance. I've relinquished all without sacrifice. And still I feel more and more. The rest is mine and is for me alone. All I need is all I have With nothing and everything Alone and alive, always alive I find myself better, constantly better Without the hassle, always looking back Finding nothing worthy, yet forced to accept Lately angry at the core Who has stolen too easily. When will it end, all this needless bullshit. All I need is all I have With nothing and everything Alone and alive, always alive I find myself better, constantly better Without the grip on my throat. All would be awake, and all Would be understood, and everyone Could be all that was possible, but The grip is tighter than ever.
All I need is all I have With nothing and everything Alone and alive, always alive I find myself better, constantly better

Big Iron Marty Robbins
* Nothing beats the original Marty Robbins version of this song -- a classic! But Mike Ness snarls out an excellent cowpunk version, and I have heard that the Dead have covered it to...
To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day Hardly spoke to folks around him, didn't have too much to say No one dared to ask his business, no one dared to make a slip The stranger there among them had a big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip
It was early in the morning when he rode into the town He came riding from the south side, slowly looking all around He's an outlaw loose and running, came a whisper from each lip And he's here to do some business with a big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip
In this town there lived an outlaw by the name of Texas Red Many men had tried to take him and that many men were dead He was vicious and a killer, though a youth of twenty four And the notches on his pistol numbered one and nineteen more One and nineteen more
Now the stranger started talking, made it plain to folks around He was an Arizonia Ranger, wouldn't be too long in town He was here to take an outlaw back alive or maybe dead And he said it didn't matter that he was after Texas Red After Texas Red
Wasn't long before this story was relayed to Texas Red But the outlaw didn't worry, men that tried before were dead Twenty men had tried to take him, twenty men had made a slip Twenty one would be the Ranger with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip
Now the morning passed so quickly and it was time for them to meet It was twenty past eleven when they walked out in the street Folks were watching from their windows, everybody held their breath They knew this handsome Ranger was about to meet his death About to meet his death
There was twenty feet between them when they stopped to make their play And the swiftness of the Ranger is still talked about today Texas Red had not cleared leather when a bullet fairly ripped And the Ranger's aim was deadly, with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip
It was over in a moment and the crowd all gathered 'round There before them lay the body of the outlaw on the ground Oh, he might have went on living but he made one fatal slip When he tried to match the Ranger with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip
Big iron, big iron Oh when he tried to match the Ranger with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip

Althea
I told Althea I was feeling lost Lackin? in some direction Althea told me upon scrutiny that my Back might need protection I told Althea that treachery Was tearin? me limb from limb Althea told me, now, cool down boy Simmer back, easy Jim
You may be Saturday?s child all grown Movin? with pinch of grace You may be a clown in the burying ground Or just another pretty face You my be the fate of Ophelia Sleepin? and perchance to dream Honest to the point of recklessness Self-centered to the extreme
Ain?t nobody messin? with you but you Your friends are getting most concerned Loose with the truth baby, it?s your fire Baby, I hope you don?t get burned When the smoke has cleared she said, That?s what she said to me Gonna want a bed to lay your head And a little sympathy
There are things you can replace And others you can not The time has come to weigh those things This space is getting hot You know this space is getting hot.
I told Althea I?m a roving sign And I was born to be a bachelor Althea told me, OK, that?s fine So now I?m tryin? to catch her Can?t talk to you without talkin? to me We?re guilty of the same old thing Thinkin? a lot about less and less And forgetting the love we bring

I know that Bob Weir's band covered the song not sure that the Dead ever have anthough I would not be surprised!
Me and My Uncle
By John Phillips
Me and my uncle went ridin' down,
South Colorado, West Texas bound.
We stopped over in Santa Fe,
That bein' the point just about half way,
And you know it was the hottest part of the day.
I took the horses up to the stall,
Went to the barroom, ordered drinks for all.
Three days in the saddle, you know my body hurt,
It bein' summer, I took off my shirt,
And I tried to wash off some of that dusty dirt.
When Texas cowboys, they's all around,
With liquor and money, they loaded down.
So soon after payday, know it seemed a shame;
You know my uncle, he starts a friendly game,
High-low jack and the winner take the hand.
My uncle starts winnin'; cowboys got sore.
One of them called him, and then two more,
Accused him of cheatin'; Oh no, it couldn't be.
I know my uncle, he's as honest as me,
And I'm as honest as a Denver man can be.
One of them cowboys, he starts to draw,
And I shot him down, Lord he never saw.
Well I grabbed a bottle, cracked him in the jaw,
Shot me another, oh damn he won't grow old.
In the confusion, my uncle grabbed the gold,
And we high-tailed it down to Mexico.
I love those cowboys, I love their gold,
I loved my uncle, God rest his soul,
Taught me good, Lord, Taught me all I know
Taught me so well, I grabbed that gold
And I left his dead ass there by the side of the road.

Nice choice PhishCubes!
How about:
Terrapin Station - Lady With a Fan
Let my inspiration flow in token rhyme, suggesting rhythm, That will not forsake you, till my tale is told and done. While the firelight's aglow, strange shadows from the flames will grow, Till things we've never seen will seem familiar.
Shadows of a sailor, forming winds both foul and fair all swarm. Down in Carlisle, he loved a lady many years ago. Here beside him stands a man, a soldier from the looks of him, Who came through many fights, but lost at love.
While the story teller speaks, a door within the fire creaks; Suddenly flies open, and a girl is standing there. Eyes alight, with glowing hair, all that fancy paints as fair, She takes her fan and throws it, in the lion's den.
Which of you to gain me, tell, will risk uncertain pains of hell? I will not forgive you if you will not take the chance. The sailor gave at least a try, the soldier being much too wise, Strategy was his strength, and not disaster.
The sailor, coming out again, the lady fairly leapt at him. That's how it stands today. You decide if he was wise. The story teller makes no choice. Soon you will not hear his voice. His job is to shed light, and not to master.
Since the end is never told, we pay the teller off in gold, In hopes he will return, but he cannot be bought or sold.
Terrapin Station
Inspiration, move me brightly. Light the song with sense and color; Hold away despair, more than this I will not ask. Faced with mysteries dark and vast, statements just seem vain at last. Some rise, some fall, some climb, to get to Terrapin.
Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim but one is bright; The spiral light of Venus, rising first and shining best, On, from the northwest corner, of a brand new crescent moon, While crickets and cicadas sing, a rare and different tune, Terrapin Station.
In the shadow of the moon, Terrapin Station. And I know we'll get there soon, Terrapin Station. I can't figure out, Terrapin, if it's the end or beginning, Terrapin, But the train's put it's brakes on, Terrapin, And the whistle is screaming, TERRAPIN.
Terrapin Station - At the Siding
While you were gone, these faces filled with darkness. The obvious was hidden. With nothing to believe in,
Sullen wings of fortune beat like rain. You're back in Terrapin for good or ill again, for good or ill again.

Simple Twist of Fate (Dylan song performed by Jerry Garcia Band)
They sat together in the park As the evening sky grew dark She looked at him and he felt a spark Tingle to his bones Twas then he felt alone And wished that he'd gone straight And watched out for a simple twist of fate
They walked along by the old canal A little confused, I remember well And stopped into a strange hotel With a neon burnin' bright He felt the heat of the night It hit him like a freight train Moving with a simple twist of fate
A saxophone someplace far off played As she was walkin' by the arcade As the light bust through a beat-up shade Where he was wakin' up She dropped a coin into the cup Of the blind man at the gate And forgot about a simple twist of fate
He woke up, the room was bare, He didn't see her anywhere He told himself he didn't care, Pushed the window open wide Felt an emptiness inside To which he just could not relate Brought on by a simple twist of fate
He hears the ticking of the clocks And walks along with a parrot that talks Hunts her down by the waterfront docks Where the sailors all come in Maybe she'll pick him out again, How long must he wait One more time, for a simple twist of fate
People tell me it's a sin To know and feel too much within I still believe she was my twin, But I lost the ring She was born in spring, But I was born too late Blame it on a simple twist of fate

Love the Dylan covers!
Pride of Cucamonga
Out on the edge of an empty highway, howling at the blood on the moon, Big diesel Mack truck rolling down my way, can't hit that border too soon. Running hard out of Muskrat Flats, it was sixty days or double life, Hail on my back like a shotgun blast, high wind chimes in the night.
Oh, oh the Pride of Cucamonga, oh, oh bitter olives in the sun, Oh, oh I had me some lovin', and I done some time.
Since I came down from Oregon, there's a lesson or two I've learned By standing in the road alone, standing watching the fires burn. The northern sky it stinks with greed, you can smell it for miles around, Good ole boys in the Greystone Hotel, sitting doing that git on down.
Oh, oh the Pride of Cucamonga, of, of silver apples in the sun,
I see your silver shining town, but I know I can't go there -- Your streets run deep with poisoned wine, your doorways crawl with fear. So I think I'll drift for ol' where it's at, where the weed grows green and fine And wrap myself around a bush of that bright, whoa, on Oaxaca vine.
Yes, it's me, I'm the Pride of Cucamonga, I can see golden forests in the sun.
