with lock jaw you would die before you could do anything.  They would find you in your bed, on your floor, on the crapper, or wherever all stiff.  your only chance of getting any would be if the EMT's that had to deal with you would be two hot lesbian lovers who had a thing for stiff corpses.

If you actually punctured your flesh with a rusty lid and did not bleed whatsoever , than yes get a shot , but if no signs of discomfort , fever have not set in with in 48 hours , you will be fine . If you did bleed real good do not worry , just keep the wound clean to prevent infection . Also if you have had a tetnus shot in the last 10 years you will be fine also . Bleeding is one of the bodies many ways to flush wounds clean .
Good Luck

A quote from further above:

tetanus is caused by toxins produced by a bacteria called clostridium tetani...

not rust.

Get rid of those lids , they are not only a risk to you , but could also harbor bacteria that will be troublesome to mushie growth ! Lids are cheap as dirt ! Med bills are not , and the sin of risking killing myc ........oh you should not cross the Mushroom Goddess with such insolance !
Rusty metal is the most common place the bacteria Anno mentioned is found , ergo rust is most definetly associated with tetanus , lock jaw is the final and last symptoms prior to death in most cases . If you have it ....you know it .....if you know it ....it is too late ! Kiss your lily white ass good bye !

>tetanus is caused by toxins produced by a bacteria called clostridium tetani... not rust.

Some chemical reactions in which bacteria participate are harmful rather than helpful to industry. Bacteria are major agents of metal corrosion (wearing away) through the formation of rust, especially on metals containing iron. During the early stages of rust formation, hydrogen is produced, and it acts to slow the rusting process. However, certain bacteria use the hydrogen as a nutrient with the result that they greatly speed up rust formation.

Tetanus, serious infectious disease of the nervous system, in which a bacterial toxin causes severe muscle spasm. Also called lockjaw, the bacterial infection occurs when wounds are contaminated with a bacillus, Clostridium tetani, which is found everywhere but which is especially likely to be present in street dirt. It is an anaerobic bacillus?that is, one that lives without oxygen, and thus when introduced into human tissue, usually at the time of an injury, it can multiply where the oxygen is deficient. This occurs both in deep, penetrating wounds and in crushing wounds with extensive tissue destruction. As the bacillus multiplies, large amounts of exotoxin are released into the surrounding tissues.

Because the bacteria is everywhere, including the rust, it gets inside your body through a cut. You usually don't get tetanus unless there's rust involved.

I see the connection between mushroom jar lids and rust, and rust and tetanus.

But this whole argument is just silly, nobody is realistically going to get tetanus from a scratch from a canning jar lid. Just swab the cut with alcohol, case closed.

Well, wouldn't you know it, but while having a good time with this thread I actually learned something: for a variety of reasons, it pays to chuck those raggedy, rusty lids and get new ones. Think I'll do that.

>You usually don't get tetanus unless there's rust involved.

one of the most common causes of tetanus infection is from horse manure. C. tetani lives dormant in the guts of horses, Mr X spreads horse manure around his rose bed, getting poop on his hands in the process. Mr X then pricks his hand on a thorn, introducing the bacterium into his blood stream...bingo! He falls asleep for a hundred years:D Don't see the connection with rust here....
I know, there's this connection between rust and tetanus that has been floating around the collective consciousness for centuries, but just because a lot of people KNOW it's true doesn't make it true.
Anyway, I'll shut up now:tongue:
