I dont know anything about spore prints or how you're supposed to handle/use them, but maybe thermal death (temp too high)?

How much vermiculite? Would perlite work as well? And I don't think the spores died at a high temp, it is resonably cool where they are.------------------ Away!

What's wrong w/ the original pf tek. That substrate sounds a little tight. if you use 1/2 cup verm, 1/4 cup water and 1/4 cup br flour instead of pure brown rice, the mycellium can grow a lot easier. plus putting the extra verm protective layer on top will prevent the contams that made your first attempt smell like shit. your tek just has no attempt at sterility,

OK thanks, I will try the PF tek (at least the substrate). I need the url for that though. Please.------------------ Away!

Hey melter8or. The shroomery has plenty of guides for growing P. cubes under Grow/Find.I am using Magic Mushroom Grower's Guide(MMGG) and I'm having no problems. I'm no expert, but from everything that I've read, a bad smell is a bad sign. The biggest pain in the ass in the whole process is waiting for your spores to arrive, and you've already done that so dont worry.

K thanks. I just today made up two jars of a perlite/homemade rice flour/water substrate. I will innoculate later tonight, and see how it goes.------------------ Away!

I innoculated my jars, the ones I was talking about in the previous post. I noticed something weird about this new substrate I tried. One of the jars, after I shook it up, did resonably well, the substrate was nice and loose, only a little clumping. The other one was quite a bit worse. It all stuck together in one big ball. For my future reference, and anybody who tries this sub., maybe use a little less water. Here is my recipe:1/4 cup homemade brown rice flour 1/2 cup perlite 1-2 tablespoons less than 3/4 cups water I think this should work. If anyone tries this one, let me know how it goes. ------------------ Away!

i don't know if that will work. i'm not sure if perlite can be substituted for vermiculite. vermiculite holds moisture but i don't think perlite does.

steam the jars instead of putting them in boiling water> it's makes a world of difference. and much more nutritious for those little shroomitiess. yummy, mmmmm

the foul odor you probably incountered was wet spot bacteria. its hard to tell if you have it because the substrate looks basicly the same, just a little more wet. You should probably use vermiculite instead of the perlite, perlite doesnt aerate the substrate like verm does, and it tends to clump together. also, if your using quart jars, you really need a pressure cooker, boiling them in water just wont get the required temperature needed for sterilization. I would read up on the MMGG or the PF tek and start off with half pint jars, they work alot better, quarts are usually for bulk substrates. read everything 2wice. when you think you can pull it off, go for it. ------------------ -LuciferX- "What if this world is another worlds hell?" -Aldous Huxley

What do you mean by steaming them? What is the process involved? I have been experimenting a little with perlite, and it seems to do the job, it hold the moisture well. Thanks for the tips, I will keep at it.------------------ Away!
