using bags instead of jars
    #1259128 - 01/29/03 03:21 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

I read about using oven safe bags (the kind you would roast a turkey in) instead of using jars to innoculate rice/vermiculite substrate. From my understanding you would sterilize the vermiculite in an oven at 300 for 25 minutes and then once it cools mix the rice and water as you would ala pf tek cake style. Then place in the bag and steam for an hour. then add another bag on top of the one with your mixture and innoculate through the bag once cooled? I have also heard you can just spray the spore mixture on to the mix. (3cc ?) Then tape the holes and put in a dark place to colonize. Is this accurate? Has anyone tried this or something similar? What about contams?

can you think of how this would have any advantage over using a more traditional method? not to say that you shouldn't experiment ... i'm just curious as to why you're chosing this over other teks. can you not find jars?

this oven bag seems like it would be very susceptible to contams ... as there would be a greater amout of surface area open when you open the bag ... also ... seems like it would be inconvienient to handle.

bags or jars theres no difference just as long as you pressure cook it. I'm guessing colonization would be really slow unless you used a little more innoculant than 3cc's. For how ever many jars the batch would have made use that many amount of cc's.

from what I know of shrooms so far PF tek is fairly gay in fruit size and potency so maybe move on to dung or rye if your going to do something bulk like bags.

This is called Hip's Bulk Tek and even hippy has turned against this.

"i'll tell you 1 tek that should be red-tagged.
hip's oven bag/bulk tek.
i've seen far more failures than successes with that one, never should have posted it, then the shroomery put it up as a tek on their site.
now i regularly get complaints from newbies who fail miserably with it. "

As a new grower you should stick with the PF Tek or the MMGG. If you can't find jars I'd suggest using drinking glasses with a tinfoil top.
